Any gardeners in my feed? Or climate and/or environmental data enthusiasts like me? I have some exciting news (ok, exciting for me): Canada’s Plant Hardiness Zone Map just got a major update. Whether you manage a yard, garden, field, or forest, this is big... 🧡

Everyone Is Using A.I. for Everything. Is That Bad?

i just find this so bizarre. searching through texts and doing the reading for myself is how i actually think through ideas! trying to put together a sentence is how i figure out what i actually want to say!

Panel One:
A scientist is giving a lecture. she stands at a lecturn. The current slide shows a list of the five kingdoms of living things: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista and Monera. She says "Most people assume that fungi are plants. Whereas in fact, they form a kingdom of their own."

Panbel Two:
Caption : After the lecture
The scientist now appears to be in a subterranean cave, before her stand two very large mushrooms guarding a larger, beardedmushroom who sits in athrone wearing a crown. One of the mushrooms says "His majesty is very pleased with the work you are doing."

This is, by a large margin, the most astonishing sample I have seen in my 'career' (15 yr sampling glacier subfossil wood)! πŸ₯°

Wanted to share it on this first World Glacier Day! πŸ§Šβ„οΈ

This trunk has spent almost 10,000 years below a glacier and I have never seen bark better preserved! πŸ’ͺ

OpenAI says it has proof that Deepseek used its work without permission to create something meant to undermine and destroy its product.

On behalf of all the authors whose novels and stories were taken as training data, oh no that must be so hard for you.

[werner herzog voice] the looney tunes are an abomination. the little bald man shoots the duck in the face but he lives. the coyote is crushed by many anvils, and yet he continues. these unnatural beings cannot die - and without death, what is the value of life itself?

Occasional reminder that there’s no, β€œit’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

This year, I recorded every movie, TV show, game, podcast, and book I engaged with, which was an experience I recommend.

Speaking of recommendations, here are the recs I have to offer based on that undertaking:
