Wilted Black Eyed Susans that did not survive the most recent freeze
A frozen bird bath with yellow and brown leaves stuck in the ice
The Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) did not survive the most recent freeze. It was cold enough (and for a long enough duration) to freeze over the bird bath.

Yellow and orange foliage in the shrub and herbaceous (lower) layer of a backyard. The red foliage poking over the fence is a Chestnut Oak sapling. A thick layer of leaves surrounds the plants. In the center is a fire pit
In the foreground, a larch tree with yellow needles. Behind the larch is a Bigtooth Aspen with bright yellow foliage
Bright orange and red foliage on the Red Chokeberry which has no berries growing under the shade of this birch tree
Still some decent fall foliage around the yard, especially in the shrub and herbaceous layer. Some notable trees that hang onto their leaves: Bigtooth Aspen, Chestnut Oak, Larch (tamarack)

I donβt but the only alternative I could think would be to put up a webcam in front of a snowstake.
Do you have an ecowitt weather station? My ambient weather recently crapped the bed and no longer connects to WiFi, am looking to buy a new station eventually.

Itβs a beautiful day for a βfall cleanupβ
I donβt remove a single leaf from the property. All get distributed in the beds, used as insulation in my nursery, and remnant scraps are mulched into the remaining lawn, a last resort, as I try to keep the leaves whole for overwintering insects.

I use this site to compare similar species. Iβd have to guess Bur Oak. I wish there were more dendrologists on Bluesky; thereβs a lot here on eastern U.S. herbaceous native plants, which Iβm all for, but I get less activity when I post about trees vs wildflowers.

grouchesofwaltham on Instagram: "Councilor McMenimen: Federal decree will get rid of suburbsIn a discussion of redistricting at the 9/27 Waltham City Council meetinβ¦"
Councilor McMenimen: Federal decree will get rid of suburbsIn a discussion of redistricting at the 9/27 Waltham City Council meeting, Council Vice President Kathleen McMenimen predicted the federal government will force Waltham to "get rid of the suburbs and create urban areas" in an attempt to create fairness. Unless Wikipedia is a liar, Waltham is a city, and McMenimen is presumably aware of that since she serves on the CITY council. So what does she mean when she talks about "suburbs" vs. "urban areas?" Is it about the size and density of the buildings? Or is it more about what kind of people are able to live here? A wise grouch brought this clip to our attention because it gives a lot of insight into how McMenimen and many others in city government see their roles-- warriors in a long, losing battle against urbanization and misguided attempts at fairness. Though a majority of Waltham residents rent our homes, the majority of people who regularly vote in Waltham elections are homeowners. Their property taxes tend to be lower than those in neighboring communities, and many believe the most important job of our city government is to protect those low taxes. Tax rates on commercial property are higher, so many in the city (including our mayor) believe that commercial property should never be repurposed as housing, because that will indirectly result in higher residential taxes. This ignores the fact that Waltham always has vacant commercial properties which are not making the city any money. Although it is not often stated as clearly as in this clip, the attitude that added housing and a growing population are fundamentally bad impacts nearly every discussion about development in our city, and it's part of the reason that many of us struggle to afford our mortgage or rent, and many of us are homeless. But this attitude will go mostly unchallenged until more people with priorities other than keeping property taxes low start voting in Waltham. In this year's election, in order for McMenimen or any of the other current at-large councilor to be removed, @colleenforwaltham needs to win. See our "Vote!" highlight for more info on the election.
Yeah, she needs to go

Car brained trolls defending a post asking pedestrians to be safe on Halloween with no mention of drivers operating their vehicles safely
Imagine being so car brained, you expect the driver of a vehicle and a young child crossing the street to share the same responsibilities
If that were the case, we wouldnβt have multiple kids dying on our streets, every day.
