No one should face discrimination because of who they are or who they love.

It’s time for the Communities Minister to deliver the LGBTQI Strategy, and for all parties to unite against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

4/ and it would not encourage more people into work,

because mental illnesses are real illnesses, and many of those affected are unable to work.

What people with mental illness need is health services, treatment, support & compassion.

2/ Data shows that economic crises & austerity measures lead to increased suicide rates.

The suicide rate in the most deprived areas is already twice that of the least deprived areas. These cuts would further widen the inequalities.

🧡 1/ I’m concerned that, if implemented in NI, the welfare cuts announced today would be utterly devastating for those with mental illness, & plunge many into suicidal distress.

Whilst suicide is complex, there is strong evidence of the link between financial pressure & suicide

Screenshot of text of a question from Danny Donnelly MLA to the Health Minister during an Assembly debate. Text reads β€˜Mr Donnelly: Does the Minister agree that the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 is outdated, that it needlessly punishes people who use drugs and that its impact on people in Northern Ireland should be reviewed?

Mr Nesbitt: I thank the Member for his intervention. The fact that the law dates from 1971 suggests that it may well be fit for review. The Member is taking me into the area of a different debate, and it is a debate that I would very much welcome the House having, including our debating taking a position on whether we are in the right place, and have been since the early 1970s, or whether it is time to look at taking a different approach. Again, for me, the fundamental is to look at the causes of the causes and how we address them.’

Encouraging response when I asked the Health Minister if he thought the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971) was outdated and needlessly punished people in NI in a debate earlier this week -

Sinn FΓ©in, the DUP, UUP and SDLP all said they wanted to protect our environment...

Yet they've all failed to back our plans to punish repeated polluters.

Words alone won't fix the environmental crisis.

A year on from the end of the DUP boycott of government in NI it shouldn’t be forgotten that Assembly is as stable today as it was the day before the last collapse. We need to reform the institutions so that no one party can veto government in NI and prevent future collapses. #EndRansomPolitics

Today, Holocaust Memorial Day, marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Today we reflect, remember, and honour.

And today we commit. To never allowing such to happen again.
