It depicts the upper quarter of a thick, dark squash in dramatic lighting, mottled with delicate lighter oblong spots. They fade into the grain of the squash. Small fine hairs are visible on the stem. Somehow the squash of unnamed variety manages to be organic, classy, almost ethereal, and reminiscent of the lid of a clay pot.

Figure 20, “A Chinese kiln of the type used at Ching-te-chen for firing porcelain.” A hand-drawn diagram of a porcelain firing kiln, with side and top view. The kiln is a big round dome that slopes down very short next to the flue where the gas escapes. The kiln starts 15 feet across but also gets narrower as it slopes down beside the flue. This shape combined with how the kiln was filed with porcelain to fire, made the hot air from the fire at the front of the kiln flow around all the pottery and heat it more than in a kiln without this shape. Really cool using the flow of air to get things hot enough to fire the porcelain properly.

Large kiln for firing porcelain, reaching the very high temperatures needed to make that pure clay into ceramics.
A footnote says that it got smaller near the flue to make the hot gases speed up, like convection.
