I’m usually thankful for any opportunity I get to forget about my own existential dread, my fear for my community and neighbors, and put on my hopeful hat to push my students to create the world that I and those who came before me have failed at.

But it’s a part of the job I believe in the most. We don’t just teach students what the law says. We teach them not just about its power to destroy but also about how those with knowledge can use it to build toward something better. If we’re doing it right, we help them not forget why they’re here.

I haven’t gotten emails this year like the one @evanbernick.bsky.social got—most students don’t know me like that yet at my new school. But I’ve gotten msgs & had convos like this w/ past students. I
t’s heartbreaking & legit hard to respond to. Esp when I struggle with the same feelings daily.

I know I'm a 1L and can't really claim to know what the Constitution means. But I have to say that I am so incredibly demoralized and angry over what has been happening in Minnesota, to say nothing of all the other horrible things ICE has been doing all over for months (and probably longer than l'm aware of) plus this administration's actions on, well, nearly everything. But the two most recent killings and the administration's response has left me wondering what the hell we are studying the law for? Is justice really so fragile, so easily ignored in American law?

Got this from a first-year law student today. I’m going to turn comments and quotes off because I am going to respond in my own way and am not looking for advice. But I think people should see it.

Some of us have been advocating this going back since chatGPT launched. It also has other benefits: correcting someone else's work is actually a really good way to learn something yourself.

The best time to abolish ICE would have been in 2021. The next best time is if we win in 2028. At this point, any Democrat unwilling to abolish ICE must be drummed out of the primary.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

This was my exact thought on first reading about this. It'll be dressed up as something being "done for the Black community." But it's functionally just a way to facilitate re-segregation.

You can be upset, dismayed, sad about political violence, about gun violence at a school in the US. You can wholeheartedly and sincerely condemn such acts.

And you can not be sad about, mourn, venerate the person killed.

Both can be true at the same time. Life is complex, man.
