The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

She’s not beating the allegations with these ads, unfortunately. Before this ad I even said β€œif I were Sydney Sweeney I’d be so mad if Nazis were using my image to promote their racism.” Normally celebrities who don’t believe in something that is using their image tend to speak out against it.

I'm too exhausted to have conversations about whether these ads of pretty white people bragging about their genes are eugenics coded, but I do know that it only took <5 years for companies' PR strategies to go from advertising diversity and featuring black ppl and trans influencers etc to this

16 million people are losing their healthcare and hospitals are already closing because of it but it’s a win because one of the bottom tier fast food restaurants is going to start selling the same Mexican Cokes that you can already get at literally every store

there is a certain liberal anti-affirmative action scholar who has insisted, like a rube, that once racial preferences are gone we can build support for class-based affirmative action. but the people who oppose affirmative action also very obviously oppose redress for class inequality!

We at Louisville Public Media just lost $376,000 due to Congress passing the rescission bill last night to claw back funds from public media across America. Today we’re asking those who value our work to help make up those funds in an emergency drive so we can maintain the staff/services we provide:

Disappearing people to rendition sites a half a world away because of missing paperwork- indefinitely is disproportionate beyond the largest extremes.

Definitely. The market shouldn’t determine whether people have access to healthcare. Or housing. Or food. But if you’re running a business to make a profit (on goods and services that aren’t required for basic living) then of course!

Some people don’t like dogs and won’t be a dog walker. Not everyone will want the same job. I imagine many people would do a β€œlower wage” job they love if they could afford itβ€” instead they’re in a bs middle management job that lets them take their kids on vacation and pay for their college.

We need bookstores and baristasβ€” doing what you love and working your dream job aren’t exactly the same thing. Obvs there can’t be 100 bookstores in the same town or on the same block, but if you work in a successful bookstore you should be able to live well.

High school was the easiest for me. Middle school is fun as long as you get the kids on your side. 4th-5th grade is a sweet spot in elementary. K-3 is the hardest IMHOβ€” bless those teachers for real.

Baltimore is seeing the city’s fewest homicides in 50 years. Here’s why. Multiple people have taken credit for the historic drop that mirrors a national decrease in violent crimes. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott says it’s due to a community-based approach to gun violence.

Put some respect on Baltimore and @mayorbmscott.bsky.social’s name. We are not your punchline. We’re a city figuring it out. Kudos to Mayor Scott & his team.

Definitely! I’m not in NYC but most of what I have seen about/from Mamdani has been about the WHY we need to do these policies, not just WHAT policies are needed. I’ve of course heard the scaremongering about the policies but the momentum is definitely coming from a place of hope.

The message of hope is what got people to turn out for Obama. The message of hope got people to show up in DC to see MLK speak. I actually think messaging that leads with hope are bound to be more successful. People say they want to see real plans but no one is paying attention to them.

Mayor Brandon Scott has reduced crime in Baltimore by 62%, and now has the lowest homicide rate in Baltimore history.

How did he do it?

NOT be spending more on police. He did it by MAJOR investment in afterschool and literacy programs.

Exactly! My friend is from Egypt. Egypt is a country in the continent of Africa. If we are being logical, she's African American. Just like anyone who is from a country in Asia is Asian American & anyone from a European country is European American. BUT racism and race categorization is not logical.

Jamelle Bouie is one of the best writers in the country. Period. At anything. The things people say to him, usually with a huff of self-satisfied indignation, are *unbelievable*.

Believing your cause to be just is not a ticket to treat other people however you want.

Independent Lens | Cooked: Survival by Zip Code | Season 21 | Episode 8 Were the 739 deaths from Chicago's 1995 heatwave a one-time tragedy or appalling trend?

Good to know, especially in the global context.

People should care equally about these extremes and not try to tie morality to one or the other.

Reminds me of this episode from independent lens:
