Forced Consent & Consent Bypass

Meta announced today that it also wants to introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This further integrates WhatsApp into other Meta services - an originally independent app, which initially was available for just $1 per year without ads or data usage. This also means that Meta is consolidating its social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this."

Australia's teen social media ban is a 'cursed monkey paw' problem A government commissioned survey shows that using online age assurance is wildly popular in theory, but is more complicated β€”Β and potentially less acceptable β€” in practice.

Most Australian support methods to enforce the teen social media ban, according to a government-commissioned survey

Most also have no idea how it works, don't trust platforms to protect their data, and expect that, at worst, it won't affect them.

I’m writing a new book! It will tell the story of what’s really behind the hyperscale data center boom

Good news: I’m writing another book!

Data centers have been a big part of the discourse over the past few years. I’ll be digging into why there are so many being built right now and the broader impacts they’re having. But also: do we really need this much compute?

The news is never premium, but sometimes it is a necessity. The idea there's some fine wine version of news people really want never works out. The inverted pyramid has been the dominant news format for longer than I've been alive because it's efficient and effective. It respects readers' time.

The best model to understand Google is essentially as white collar mobsters. If you don't play by their rules, no one's going to come kneecap you but you'll bleed traffic and money. If you play by their rules, you'll slowly get less money in exchange for more work β€” until they as good as own you.
