We think that adolescents and young adults rely more on feedback of their peers during social situations where the drinking norm is more ambiguous such as social non-alcohol drinking situations (SNAD).

We refer to this paradox as the social plasticity model of risk and resilience (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...). We are currently conducting a longitudinal MRI study in adolescents and young adults to further investigate this paradox (nofaresearch.com/en/research-...).

We hypothesise that adolescence is associated with an increased risk of developing substance use disorders. At the same time, we suggest that some of the risk factors commonly linked to adolescent onset of substance use may serve as protective factors later in early adulthood.
