"People from wealthy homes don’t see those barriers because they’ve never had to overcome them. So when they see Māori getting into medicine, they say it’s because we’re Māori, and we got a free ride. But we’re not getting free rides. We’re just taking away those barriers. That’s it."

Depends a bit on what you want to compare against and over what time period. If NZ had experienced the same excess death rate as the US or UK for 2020-23, we would have had (ball park) 15,000 more deaths than we did.

In the first months of Covid the average NZers biggest worry was waiting in a queue for the supermarket and missing take aways - they had these issues overseas too they just also have overflowing temporary morgues

New Waikato Medical School: Poor process, ‘chumocracy’ and ‘cosyism’ means likely poor outcome
On 21 May I was introduced to two new words (always a moment of light excitement for me) by Dr Bryce Edwards, Director of the newly established Integrity Institute which publishes regular Integrity…
"In a memo to then Health Minister Shane Reti in September last year, Treasury recommended that Auckland and Otago Medical Schools be asked to present a counter-factual argument to the Waikato proposal. However, it appears that no such invitation was made."

Yes. Yes. And Yes.
There is no plan. No alternative plan - despite assertions and promises for 18 months. And
asking one Counsel pointed out there literally isn't currently a NZ Health Plan, nor a Maori Health Plan, no Hauora Maori Strategy. . . Aargh!

Did you watch Crown closing? Admits no alternative plan, tribunal must judge system based on disestablishment act and last year's reforms. How many papers submitted claiming it existed? All bullshit. Judge Stone looked a bit stunned.
