Extending him, if Keon wants that, will now cost more as evidenced by the depressed RFA market this passed summer. Keon now has leverage of UFA next summer to up his asking price on an extension. If an agreement is in place, then what's the wait? Same goes for Keegan. Won't kick in till 26-27 anyway

Exactly. Had they not, he would have been a RFA this summer and the Kings could have matched any offer in a very depressed market. Now, they run the risk of him hitting UFA next summer and leaving for nothing. Thus the "surprisingly" in the title of that article. It was a dumb move.

Disagree, it wasn’t an extension choice for Keon. It was a choice between RFA and UFA, and they chose the later. The market now shows they likely could have retained him in the cheap. That was a mistake by Perry.

Scott Perry completely misjudged this offseason free agency. First Keon, then an overpay for Dennis, and now stuck in the mud with the Kuminga situation. Not a good look for what's supposed to be an experience GM. Maybe the league doesn't work the way he remembers it?
