In some ways, it was a perfect encapsulation of the ADL's new tack.
The group was founded on the idea that Jewish rights and safety were inextricably linked to the rights of others. Once the ADL's primary focus became stopping anti-Zionism, its calculus changed. Its new version of Jewish defense was zero sum and dependent on a conception of a singular Jewish viewpoint. "New plan," Greenblatt said in his address to national leadership last year, repeating a phrase that had recently been taken up by other Jewish organizations: "Put on your own oxygen mask first."
Sad to see whatβs happened to the ADL under Greenblatt. Very well reported story here by @noahshachtman.bsky.social . As for the quote, I donβt think the analogy works unless the idea is that one should put on their own mask whilst throwing othersβ out of reach. nymag.com/intelligence...

Previewing the August 26 special election in Iowa Senate district 1
Laura Belin: Iowa Senate district 1 leans to Republicans but should be highly competitive in a low-turnout special election.
A name we should all familiarize ourselves with over the next 4 weeks:
CATELIN DREY
DREY is the Dem running to flip Iowa State Senate District 1 in a Special Election on August 26th.
This is a flippable seat, and the article below sets the table nicely.

Beyond the cruelty, paying to detain people who could be out supporting themselves and their families is a huge waste for an administration that claims to favor efficiency. This looks more like a giveaway to the private companies with the contracts to house the migrants.

John Gast's "American Progress"--now on the official account of the Department of Homeland Security. Constitutionalism is more than text, especially in domains like expansion, dispossession, and borders (where there isn't much text)--it is also ideas about "nature," values, principles, and ideology.
