01.10.2025 05:43 β π 50 π 8 π¬ 2 π 0I think this is where we need utility based definitions that vary for context. What is the social/cultural/political point or utility of describing a group of people purely on "works in these specific jobs" rather than what that (type of) employment means? What is the value of that identity?
29.09.2025 23:42 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm happy to ascribe any definition to the right context but the idea the meaning of working class derives from an immutable set of professions baffles me as the requirements and status (and association with wealth) changes with society
These things are only valuable such as they provide some value
This has nothing to do with me I'm trying to determine how they classify one type of manual labor from another type so I referenced two focused repetitive tasks that require manual dexterity. What is functionally different between that and repeatedly measuring small volumes of liquid?
29.09.2025 23:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Where did I make this about my current status? You'd get more by asking questions than making accusations.
When I got those injuries I was working for minimum wage in what would be considered a high-skilled trade that happened to require a 4 year degree. I made more bartending.
I didn't say I was working class. I think you misunderstand the intent. I am trying to understand the definition. It can't be a natural definition, so we have to determine it from observation of the essential characteristics of the class. We have to start with cases that aren't 100% clear
29.09.2025 23:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I mean this in all good faith but I also think disengaging because you don't feel it's productive isn't a negative.
Best of luck.
What about a foreman type role which still performs wage manual labor but who had to get a management degree (mail in, online) or technical certification? Where would they fall? I think you will find them strict definitions have penumbral cases which kind of undercuts the idea this is a natural obsv
29.09.2025 20:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Degrees didn't always exist so you concede the definition evolves as society changes?
For income, would someone being paid well to do manual labor (but still hourly) not be working class? What's the limit?
I think we need to justify what is essential "for the purpose" as it's a social construct.
Why would you distinguish the manual labor that wat? Is pipetting different from welding? Is it dangerous? What if there's a bsl3 context or p32? Is it different from garment sewing or electronics assembly?
I have multiple RSI from lab work so I'm curious how you distinguish labor types.
These definitions vary even in closely related cultures. Middle class in USA vs UK is very different. I don't think a strict definition of a group that doesn't take into account the importance of different (and changing) overlapping characteristics that might ascribe membership is valuable.
29.09.2025 20:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think we end up needing different definitions for contexts (which you allude to). Especially as the relationship between training, labor, and survival evolves over time to mean different things as an end result of those factors.
29.09.2025 20:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Would an independent personal trainer without a degree be working class while a wage-earning trainer at a high end gym that requires a 4 year degree (or associates?) be not working class if otherwise performing identical activities? If I have a PhD but do assembly line work am I working class?
29.09.2025 20:27 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm willing to accept this as an operational definition but we can't just say "this is what it means" without unpacking the cultural/social perception that differs in the minds of the broad public (does the major impact drive from positivist classification or cultural norms).
29.09.2025 20:25 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0I dunno this is making a hard distinction I'm not sure I align with. Are teachers not working class? Would a lab technician doing manual labor in a lab not be working class despite their income level and artisanal craft just because of job requirements?
