I was about to cry because I was working on the saving / loading for the crochet system and out of nowhere my voice chat system broke, and I was going crazy to figure out what went wrong...

I much prefer to take a simple idea for a prototype, testing, finding the fun and explore the idea within the engine. I find this more enjoyable for me, my team, and ends up creating more fun for players, a GDD can come later when there needs to be a place to review establish design principles
I feel like sometimes it requires me to make assumptions and write them down, even if they turn out not being fun, and then go back and correct it and waste time. A jam required that you just make a design document the first week and then make the game the next week, which just didnโt work for me :c

Each project is unique to you so it has unique problems that you need to get creative to solve. Throughout my CS college experience Iโm typically given a problem and told how to solve it, and just memorize it!
