I'm going to throw myself into the TV coverage of the Winter Olympics. Sports I know nothing about will become gripping. Skiing will become an epic saga; curling a form of high art. It will, at least, be a distraction from the February blues.

Trumpland Ramps Up Attacks On Netflix Warner Brothers Merger To Help Larry Ellison So we’ve been noting how the Trump administration has been helping Larry Ellison wage war on Netflix’s proposed merger with Warner Brothers. Not because they care about antitrust (that&…

I wrote about how the Heartland Institute (of Project 2025 fame) is helping the GOP attack the Netflix Warner Brothers merger because they really want Larry Ellison to build state television out of the remnants of CNN and HBO:

Anything by Queen. Extremely talented musicians, perfectly crafted songs and spellbinding arrangements and yet somehow they manage to make everything they do sound shit.

You're not concerned about Databrick's acquisition of Tabular? Or are there enough contribution/developers from elsewhere (Apple, Snowflake, Google, Netflix etc) to keep it neutral?

Have we stopped to think about what LLMs actually model? : Claims about much-hyped tech show flawed understanding of language and cognition, research argues

At the same time it has been associated with many false claims. GenAI doesn't think and LLMs don't model language. It's important we understand why. Also many models were built by stealing IP in a way the tech industry itself would never tolerate. www.theregister.com/2024/08/30/a...

I would disagree with the statement "it doesn't work and is fake". But it depends on how you judge what work it is good for. Some problems it helps with; others less so. Sadly, it has become a hype cycle with trillions of dollars resting on its supposed transformational powers.

The UK paid Β£4.1 million for a bookmarks site Or, as they like to call it, the 'AI Skills Hub'. Which was built by PwC because of course it was

Nice work if you can get it.

PwC are paid Β£4.1m by the UK Government for a set of bookmarks you could vibe code in a few hours.

Public procurement is a racket.

they skills they really need are in-house technology and commercial so the big suppliers stop wagging the dog. but that would cost money and no-one really cares until it goes wrong

Do read this thread. It covers the classic problems of govt IT ventures: capture by the providers, poor information management and huge security holes, improbably complex signup process, and low quality outcomes. Surely it might have been better to partner with a university than this corporate slop?

A red squirrel on the ground. It almost looks like it is in superhero pose with one front paw and one back paw on the ground. The other front and back paws are raised in the air, its head is forward ready to run towards the camera.

What we all need to see is a red squirrel in a power pose.
You're welcome.
