Seeing a few lefty folks responding to the trump administration's lawlessness by denouncing the Rule of Law, as a concept. And, hmm. Idk about that.

Could likely be a combination of both! A warrior culture like the Klingons have is inherently hyper-masculine, which sees any other profession as lesser, so I always figured there was an element of compensating there, to be seen as a "warrior" just as much as those who fight with disruptors.

Their only understanding of art is on a superficial level of aesthetics, so all their artistic efforts are fundamentally soulless.

What's funny is that DS9 contains many scenes that make it explicit the Klingon culture isn't static. Jadzia's discussion with Bashir & O'Brien, correcting the stereotype that Klingons are like ancient sea pirates was basically breaking the fourth wall to the fans who thought the same thing.

I always thought that, since the warrior caste would have been severely bloodied in the Klingon's recent wars, that other castes in Klingon society would gain prominence, leading to a cultural revolution of sorts. The Martok Era would be something like Meiji Restoration-era Japan.

What's interesting about that is that said lawyer tries to couch his profession in the language of warriors. It's not a "courtroom" it's a "battlefield." It's not a "legal debate" it's the "thrill of the fight." It's a nice hint that the warrior culture is so pervasive others have to overcompensate.

Hell, we don't even need to look at mythical heroes; the Sacred Band of Thebes is a great real-life example of same-sex male lovers.

Thanks for explaining what English chips are to an Englishman. I would define them as "not this" considering these are flat discs. These are basically chunky crisps or slightly thick potato slices.

I'm not ruling out that there's some anti-Irish bigotry at work here too. ICE are basically driven by Klan philosophy, and the Klan absolutely hate the Irish.

Oh no, tartare sauce with fish & chips is fine. Coleslaw with it is weird, but it can work if the coleslaw isn't strangely sweet like a lot of American coleslaw tends to be.

A screenshot of Fish and Chips from an American restaurant. The description reads:

"Three beer battered cod strips served with English chips and fresh slaw. Served with tartar sauce and a fresh lemon wedge."

The photo of the food has the "English chips" in the foreground, which is a pile of circular, relatively flat slices of deep-fried potatoes.

America, we need to talk about what you think "English chips" actually are.

Even if it fails, I'd much rather them try and fail, than just surrender having not tried at all.

I miss this show. Maybe when real life has caught up with the time jump in the books, we'll finally get a continuation and the rest of the books adapted!

Yep. Power has gone to her head, just like it did for the Bloc, but at least with Quebec the referendum was only narrowly defeated. In Alberta it looks like it would get curb stomped and Smith still thinks she can get the same kind of deal.

I think two reasons:

1. The media loves fanning the flames, like you say; and

2. The Premier of Alberta is a fucking moron who assists in the above

Don't get me wrong, I'm a pragmatist at heart, Harris would have been infinitely better for the US & the world than Trump. But I don't buy the argument presented that when a candidate loses the election, it's all the voter's fault and nobody else.

09.02.2026 22:50 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I would argue that it's not incumbent on the voters, but it's incumbent on the candidate to appeal to the voters. In this instance, voters (particularly those in the critical swing state of Michigan) told the Harris campaign exactly what they needed to vote Dem, and Dems refused to entertain it.

"Vote them into office and then push them left once they've won!"

Lol yes, because politicians famously listen to people and get *more* radical once in power, never less.

09.02.2026 22:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You figured out their dastardly secret! Everyone who didn't vote blue or red are just fart huffers who want to feel better than you. There are no other reasons at all. What's more, they're sure to vote for your preferred candidate if you just condescendingly badger them a bit more! That'll do it!

09.02.2026 22:31 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Actually it's more like Pilot A will land you and get you part of the way there but they have to run over people you care about to do it, while Pilot B will crash into a mountain. How is either option good, and how can one call oneself moral by forcing people to choose?

09.02.2026 22:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

No he didn't, and is he the role model for Democratic politicians now?

09.02.2026 22:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

To use your logic - why is that bad and why do you care more about them than the people being killed by American weapons in Gaza? That logic works both ways.

09.02.2026 22:18 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I only ask because one of my dealbreakers is I will not vote for someone who won't at least maintain military aid to Ukraine. That position is by and large seen as sensible and virtuous, and I don't get the same sneering condescension as Americans who broke with Dems over Gaza.

09.02.2026 22:16 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Do people overseas who are dying as a *direct* result of US foreign policy choices only matter when they're not brown, or something? Or is it just a case of out of sight, out of mind?

09.02.2026 22:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Exactly this. It's not even enough that you voted for Harris (what they claim is all they want), anything less than sufficiently blind devotion is considered heretical. The only situation they're willing to accept is for you to shut up and keep quiet, so they don't have to do any self-reflection.
