5e is designed around the point buy system, the minimum stat score for a level 1 character is 8 (a -1) and maximum is a 17 (+4).

I myself as DM use point buy and every DM i have played with for more then 3 sessions uses it as well as rolled stats can cause massive disparity in the party.
