Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

As someone who has studied the circulation of terms “subversive” and “communist” in the lead to and through McCarthyism as empty signifiers to justify violent suppression I feel like I’m both amazed and unsurprised how transparently and unsophisticatedly “woke” and “antifa” are now doing the same.

What happens now that Republicans shut down the government?

- Federal workers stop getting paid
- Air travel could be delayed
- Food inspection services may be delayed
- Head Start services may be disrupted
- Passport + Visa applications could slow
- National Parks may shut down

In general, it's f-----g insane that the sitting POTUS and VP regularly single out individual citizens for disparagement using their official gov't accounts.

I think there was a pretty strong presidential norm against this sort of thing until, well, about 8 years ago.
