Ride-sharing apps are good, actually The real "cautionary tale" is that the old taxi cartels were bad

The rise of ride-sharing apps has been change for the better.

It's also an illustration of the fact that sometimes positive change for society is bad for some reasonably sympathetic people and life isn't all Evil Billionaires.

Kansas Votes to Preserve Abortion Rights Protections in Its Constitution (Published 2022)

My small country, Estonia, population 1.3 million sent 2003-2014 over 2500 soldiers. 9 were killed in the line of duty. 109 wounded, half of them so seriously they could no longer lead a normal life.

In Iraq 2003-2009 we had more than 440 soldiers. 2 were killed. 18 seriously wounded.

I think a really underrated idea for Democrats would be to to try:

(a) Study public opinion accurately
(b) Adopt views, especially on social and moral values issues that align with public opinion

Or they can try this.

Also Dems: How dare you platform journalists who’ve written a deeply reported book that makes some Biden supporters uncomfortable?

I know it's hard to enforce in the American system, but it's not great when members of Congress, Supreme Court justices (or possibly presidents) die in office from illnesses related to old age. Social and professional norms around SCOTUS should change. Donors should pressure politicians to retire.

β€œBut Trump blah blah blah” people generally dislike Trump and still preferred what he offered to what Democrats were offering, probably should be some more soul searching about that. I personally think it’s important to keep people like Trump out of power by running the best candidates in every race

The Kleptocracy Presidency Under Trump, conflicts of interest are just part of the system.

"We are living through a revolutionary change, a broad shift away from the transparency and accountability mandated by most modern democracies, and toward the opaque habits and corrupt practices of the autocratic world"

Switched from zsh to fish shell a few months ago. It has been mostly great, but two main annoyances stand out:

* No {} or similar for string interpolation. foo_"$bar"_baz sucks.
* Universal variables are a terrible idea. Even though I don't use them, some builtins use them under the hood.

The Five Scandals (and One Fascinating Political Insight) of Signalgate The Trump administration's group chat tells a lot about itself

Across the last 48 hours, β€œSignalgate” has morphed from one scandal into what I think is best thought of as five distinct overlapping scandals, as well as providing some fascinating political insight into who has power and how decisions get made in Trump II. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/the-five-s...

David: Are you concerned about retaliation from the Trump administration because of this story?

Jeffrey: It’s not my role to care about the possibility of threats or retaliation. We just have to come to work and do our jobs to the best of our ability. Unfortunately, in our society todayβ€”we see this across corporate journalism and law firms and other industriesβ€”there’s too much preemptive obeying for my taste. All we can do is just go do our jobs.
