From what I've seen, "changing sex" is used as, in part, the claim to acceptance. Early-transitioners, non-hormonally-dysphoric binary&nonbinary people, trans kids in limbo before puberty blockers, people with medical contraindications, and people like CAIS transmascs - well, it is what it is ig?

You can and should indeed argue "actually, a lot of trans people change sex", and DIY should be way way more accessible. At the same time, creating an intra-group distinction based on hormone access status is hella dodgy, much less seriously trying to argue that it's a way to greater acceptance? No.

it's not about taking or not taking hrt, it's about claiming authority (or rather piggybacking off cis authority) over who is and who isn't truly trans. it's trying to draw a line they can be on the right side of to demonstrate to cis people that they're the good ones.

they think some of us are embarrassing and holding them back from conditional cis acceptance, so if they can invent a way to distinguish between trans people willing to jump through cis hoops and those who won't or can't, the hoop jumpers jump will be rewarded. the medical stuff is just a proxy.
