I have a 4:45 am alarm set on my smartwatch and a 4:55 am alarm set on my phone, which I charge in another room at night. That way I have the best possible chance of actually getting up and making my way downstairs in time for the hockey at 5:10 am. The things we do for sport! Let’s go, Canada!

A large Regency house. Two sisters named Emilia and Charlotte talk on an upper floor.
"Mister Blackwell has come to call again." says Emilia as she looks out of the window "Oh, how I despise his uncouth manners and electric bicycle!"

Charlotte says "Sister, you will end up a spinster if you insist on a historically accurate suitor."
and continues "The romance novel has changed, Emilia, and so must we."

Emilia replies "Easy for you to say. You are engaged to the richest werewolf in the county!"

They are walking through the house.

Charlotte says "Look at Cousin Lucy: She is quite plain, yet made a most advantageous match with the dragon queen of nalthrax."

"True." says Emilia opening the door.

The tall, solid figure of Miuster Blackwell stands at the door wearing a top hat and tailcoat:
"Ladies, I triumphed In my ice hockey match and won ten thousand a year in sponsorship! Miss Emilia, will you be my bride?" he is holding a hockey stick.

Emilia swoons into Charlotte's arms.

I truly loved it, and I don't say that about many short story collections! You're a master of your art.

Doing well thanks, busy editing lots of grants (it's one of my two busiest months of the year) and watching the Olympics!

I just finished this collection of speculative fiction short stories today, and WOW. Each one is a gem. I'm biased because I know Vanessa, but she truly is an amazing writer, and I highly recommend this magical collection.

Write more soon, please, Vanessa!

I've probably written more than a couple cringy ones myself, actually :)

I'm sure I've read a bunch of both excellent and cringy ones, but none immediately come to mind! I'll have to start keeping a list of new ones I encounter in the wild

My favourite example was "the land of the scything run" as a second-mention for Japan, from a piece about their national rugby team

Reviews - The Little Book of Second Mentions: The Art of Avoiding Repetition | The StoryGraph

I enjoyed this delightful little book by @secondmentions.bsky.social about the ways in which journalists try to avoid repeating words. As a science writer I was disappointed there weren't any STEM examples in this short volume, but it's a really fun mini-tome! app.thestorygraph.com/book_reviews...

Photo of a broad pedestrian path that curves from bottom right to middle left of the image. A much narrower paved path has been put in that creates a shortcut toward the end of the curve, but people have created a wide desire path (in the form of a dry muddy track over a grassy area) that cuts off much more of the curve of the main path

I love that the city anticipated that people would create a desire path as a shortcut for the curved main path, so they built one in, but people's desire to be lazy was stronger than expected

What a fun hockey game! I might need to reconsider my support for the (Canadian) charity that called me while Horvat was rushing the net, though, regardless of how good their work is

The base number of tea is 3 (daily recommended consumption) and so allowed package sizes are 36 (for a quick visit), 72 (they stayed an extra fortnight), 144 (they’re planning to emigrate), 216 (they’re here but broke) and 1040 (citizenship).

Ours do seem to use the fountain a bit (even if they don't let us catch them in the act), but it's definitely not their favourite. We have a plain water bowl for them too, and tolerate a certain amount of stealing of water from other sources!

06.02.2026 22:31 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think our two do actually drink from the fountain, based on how fast the water level goes down compared to their plain water bowl, but they don't let us catch them at it!

My cats' usual opinion on their water fountain: meh, would rather try to drink from your glass or try and sneak into the bathroom and drink from the toilet

It's amazing how disruptive it can be to keep *not* getting a phone call you're expecting

(I'm supposed to give a contractor access to my building's communications room, which will take 5 minutes tops, but I've been waiting for the call to do that 5-minute task since yesterday lunchtime)

Trump is "like a Roomba. His actions are not strategic. They’re often not even particularly tactical. He simply pushes in a direction, consuming what he can. When he runs into opposition he turns and starts devouring in another direction. Sooner or later, though, he always circles back"
