TL;DR an angry young white man's legitimate hatred for the US empire gets hijacked by disinformation targeting the Western left (which we STILL aren't talking about realistically in radical spaces). He moves to Russia, signs up to "fight fascists in Ukraine," and the FAFO is as cruel as you can imagine.

The tragedy of a tankie revolutionary. Move to Russia to fight fascist America, get swallowed whole by the reality of Russia's fascist military. That Gloss was put in a unit of racialized cannon fodder shock troops is ... like straight up I don't know what to say. He was a very confused young man. There are many like him. I know one of them. Luckily he's too lazy and depressed to do anything at all with his misdirected rage.

There are very serious consequences to bad ideas and dogmatic ideologies. Shame on the monsters who radicalized Michael Gloss. In the case of my friend, it was his own mother who started him down the batshit tankie path and helped him arrive at the same set of beliefs as Gloss after the 2016 US presidential election. This made the disinformation campaigns of that year very real to me, losing a friendship over whether the White Helmets were "CIA-backed head-chopping terrorists" or not.

My friend grew up in a rich southwest Minneapolis family. His mom who I mentioned was a leading organizer in a prominent antiwar activist group. I didn't realize she was herself on the racist conspiracy theorist fringe of boomer lefties addled by Russian fascist war propaganda until I wrote her directly to express concern about behaviors her son had been exhibiting. She basically called me a state department spy and told me to go fuck myself. I'd known that family since the fourth grade.
