Democrats can win the redistricting war, says political analyst NateSilver. It will depend on two things:

1️⃣ Voter turnout
2️⃣ Democratic state trifectas

Are you surprised that in so many states redistricting is entrusted to state legislatures?

There are 27 states with a trifecta where redistricting is entrusted to state legislatures.

They include:
(R): AL; AR; FL; GA; IN; IA; LA; MS; MO; NE; NH; OH; OK; SC; TN; TX; UT; WV
(D): CA; CT; IL; MD; ME; MA; NM; OR; RI

In response, California Democrats introduced the ‘Election Rigging Response Act’.

If Texas votes to redraw its congressional map and give the GOP five new seats, California would set a Nov. 4 special election to allow voters to decide to redistrict.

The House committee voted, 12-8 to move the measure forward, with Republicans making it clear they will vote for redistricting that benefits their party.

It doesn’t stop at CA and TX. 38 states currently have a trifecta, where one party controls all three major parts of a state’s government: 23 Republican, 15 Democratic.

Democracy is on the line: Texas Republicans are moving forward with an extreme gerrymander.

States matter, state legislatures help determine districting. That's what we're seeing in Texas right now. If we don't focus on winning back democratic power at the state level, that'll have impact locally at the state level and nationally for years to come.

The Texas House voted to issue arrest warrants for absent Democrats.

While they likely can’t be enforced, it's still an unprecedented action.

For these new maps to be put to a vote, they need a quorum-a certain number of members present.

Texas democrats are fighting back by leaving the state, breaking quorum, and preventing a vote from happening.

This is yet another power grab from the White House to secure a Republican party advantage in the 2026 midterm elections.

After pressure from the White House, Republicans raced to push through a new congressional map to give the GOP up to 5 more seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.

This could cement control even as the state grows more diverse.
