Bottom of the shell of a moon snail (Neverita duplicata) with a brown fuzzy coating on most of the shell (probably from an encrusting bryozoan) except for an elliptical shiny patch. The patch was caused by a hermit crab (or crabs) dragging the shell across a quartz-sand beach, and because the quartz is harder than the encrusting material and the calcite shell, the dragging wore down the shell there. A photo scale below has millimeter squares, showing the shell is about 20 mm wide.

How can you tell a marine-snail shell has/had a hermit crab living in it? Look at its bottom & if you find a shiny spot, that's a trace left by a hermit crab, showing that it dragged the shell across quartz sand that was harder than the shell and/or whatever encrusted the shell. 🧪🐚🦀🐾 #ichnology
