No major #hurricane had struck before August on the Pacific coast of #Mexico until #Erick2025 did so in *mid-June*. #Erick made landfall as a category 3 after peaking as a 145 mph Cat 4 monster (map from @noaa.gov). πŸ“ˆ weather extremes take a ☠️ & πŸ’Έ toll. And a lot of dead canaries in coal mines.

Very loud thunder from yesterday's storm - I realise I posted a lot of clips to Twitter/X and very little here so I'll have to post more pics later to balance it out

The GFS model has finally picked up on the first likely tropical wave of 2025, with its departure from Western Africa possibly on May 19th , next Monday, it will lose its signature as it traverse the Atlantic Ocean, usually first AEW’s are generally weak/low latitude in nature.

It’s almost that time to be seeing those African Easterly Waves being born, every May the first few AEW’s are born, generally weak and low latitudes.

Usually around 60 waves are born and track through the Atlantic Ocean on an annual average basis, with much of them becoming TC’s down the road.

Lowlights:

* Only 1 per day hand-edited forecasts
* Permanent 1 per day balloon launches if 25%+ vacancy at office
* No balloon launches if an office goes to 3 shifts/day
* Reduced shifts
* Combining offices

The world's example for weather services is being destroyed.

I've added the Meteosat Third Generation Imager 1 satellite, with images every 10 minutes and higher resolution data in line with Himawari-9 and the GOES satellites. Will be very useful this upcoming season to monitor tropical waves and watch disturbances in the eastern Atlantic!

Saw a synop station in Choluteca Honduras maxed out at 40.6C this afternoon, that's sounds like some record was crushed for March

Hey. You should text/call/voice-note some friends just because. Don't just DM silly videos. Check in with them. We all need some genuine connection right now!

Think I can add the desert SW US heatwave and Mexico heatwave too as a notable one for its record breaking intensity

The impacts of climate change are already disastrous, and are going to intensify in coming years: β€œIt’s likely the total number of people killed in extreme weather events intensified by climate change this year is in the tens, or hundreds of thousands.”
