I am not expressing a personal view on her journalistic credentials, I just think she should be living her life and not rotting in jail.
09.12.2025 06:10 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It is also the case that some journalists in Taiwan with opposite views on unification have also taken the "influencer" path - which I could define as not being a journalist talking about a cause but becoming the public face of that cause. I would also call them "influencers" for that matter.
09.12.2025 06:08 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0For me, this is not what journalists do.
She may/might still do journalistic work on other topics, so I don't intend to deny her that "status", but she has become an influencer when it comes to unification.
She has for several months now been appearing in podcasts, youtube programs, etc. hosted by pro-unification forces in Taiwan, in China or in the Chinese diaspora.
She is even celebrated as a good catch by famous pro-unification influencers (see here for instance - on X - : x.com/NiSiv4/statu...).
(of course, sharing her views exposes her to criticism or push back, which is a normal rule of public debate in a democracy). But I go further, calling her an "influencer" and I stand by this qualification. She is not only a journalist expressing personal views but has taken on a influencer carreer.
09.12.2025 05:56 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I think journalists can express their opinions though (as long as it is clearly labelled as an opinion), as we all have this right in a democracy. So I am not blaming A.O. for sharing her views on unification. Many journalists in Taiwan (pro or against that perspective) have done so before her.
09.12.2025 05:53 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0My view: one is a journalist when one is reporting news in an independent way (I, for one, am not a journalist: while I am using journalistic techniques, my work is on the communications side). Many journalists refrain from sharing their opinions in order to maintain the appearance of independence.
