KMT might then say: “We sincerely appreciate the support”

Quite an interesting choice: the Mandarin translation of “Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company” by @patrickmcgee.bsky.social is among the many books bought by Taiwan’s President Lai at the opening of the 2025 Taipei Book Fair.

At least, they give some good tips, like, when being scolded, answer "thank you for your support".

We sincerely appreciate the support expressed by members of the U.S. Senate for Taiwan and their continued interest in Taiwan’s defense and cross-strait stability. These remarks reflect the strong commitment within the U.S. Congress to Taiwan’s security, and KMT takes these views very seriously. In response, we would like to offer the following clarifications:
1.KMT has consistently supported strengthening defense power, including ensuring that the defense budget is both reasonable and efficient. We regret that some recent information may not have been fully conveyed, and we welcome the opportunity to clarify the relevant facts. At the same time, we emphasize that responsible defense spending must be accompanied by transparency, fiscal discipline, and appropriate legislative oversight, in order to avoid inefficiencies, misallocation of resources, and the recurrence of past corruption incidents under the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
2.Following amendments to the Military Personnel Pay Act, monthly allowances for voluntary service members in the R.O.C. Armed Forces could be raised from approximately NT$13,000–15,000 to NT$30,000. This adjustment represents a substantial improvement in the treatment of military personnel and will result in an estimated annual budget increase of approximately NT$30 billion.
3.These amendments were supported and advanced by KMT legislators with the objective of improving morale, strengthening recruitment and retention, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the volunteer force. However, it is a matter of public record that the DPP did not support this amendment and the government did not incorporate the corresponding funding into the general budget after it has been passed into law.
4. In comparative perspective, U.S. military personnel operate under a more comprehensive compensation framework, combining base pay with allowances and benefits designed to sustain a professional force over long-term service. This comparison highlights the importance of continued efforts to improve the welfare and treatment of ROC’s service members in a manner commensurate with their responsibilities and the increasing demands placed upon them.
5.Finally, KMT emphasizes that legislative oversight and fiscal responsibility are essential to long-term defense planning. While multi-year defense budgets may support strategic continuity, they must be accompanied by detailed planning, clear allocations, and effective oversight to prevent waste and inefficiency. In addition, ongoing delays in the delivery of critical military equipment underscore the need for realistic planning and accountability.
Once again, we thank members of the U.S. Senate for their valuable input. KMT remains fully committed to safeguarding Taiwan’s security, strengthening our defense capabilities, and also engaging constructively through dialogue to advance peace and stability across the strait.

direct flights opened and KMT was widely described as being in favor of "increased exchanges with China, contrary to the DPP". The fact is - at the time at least - both wanted increased exchanges but only one was ready to say that Taiwan is part of China. Then Beijing kept asking for more and

Thiis is the same story as for the opening of the direct flights in 2009-2010: the DPP Chen Shui-bian government was in favor of direct flights were they got blocked by Beijing which insisted on political concessions first. When Ma came to power, he declared his adherence to the "1992 Consensus" and

Meanwhile, the Kuomintang (with its adherence to the so-called 1992 consensus) is able to talk to Beijing and uses that access to signal that if it were in power, things would change.

That is why I constantly insist on the fact that China was the first to prevent its tourists to visit Taiwan and has since not relax its restrictions (except for Fujian province visitors to Mastu and Kinmen).

But if Taiwan were to unilateraly reopen to Chinese individual and group tourists, those tourists would still need approval from the Chinese government to visit Taiwan (only Chinese people who reside in third countries do not need that pass, which is why Taiwan has reopened fully for them).

Taiwan's government has signaled many times its openness to direct talks on tourism for an "orderly reopening" but Beijing has effectively stopped all talks for years (basically, Beijing wants the DPP government to say Taiwan is part of China and won't talk otherwise).

At the time, Taiwan did not retaliate.
In 2020, Taiwan banned tourists group to China because of the Covid pandemic. Those tours remain banned (Taiwan quotes safety concerns but also keeps this as bargaining chip to get China authorize again its tourists go to Taiwan).

Morning! China was the first to strike in that matter, restricting part of its outbound tourism to Taiwan early as 2019 (hence before Covid) in order to put political pressure on Taiwan's government (a common practice for Beijing, also seen targeting Japan, Korea, etc.).

Maybe the next time Trump/Rubio/Leavitt go to “it’s a brutal war on both sides” to talk about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, someone can follow up with the simple fact that Russia bombs civilian population centers daily and Ukraine does not at all.
