Now in my adult years, I have lived in NJ for a smidge longer than I lived in west TX where I was born and raised.

One constant reminder of this is that my phone now autocorrects “honky tonk” to “honky TONY” — arguably one of the most Texan words subbed for the most Jersey word.

Spiller: echoes Fulop’s comments on city leadership and municipal perspective, says he had the legislative Trenton experience as a labor leader too.

Baraka note that what other candidates propose is what he’s already doing as mayor. He flirts with some of the problematic framing above without getting too close to it.

Note that lots of folks bristle against this framing.

Summer youth employment is a career path. Inactive and unemployed youth are not inherently criminal or dangerous. We can’t conflate the two.

Ditto head start, tutoring — kids of Color aren’t prone to crime bc there aren’t enough activities.

Sherrill: starts with past history in reentry work. Implicitly says no one is disposable, but in the framing of reentry, not prevention or interruption.

“The last place we should put public dollars is Dept of Corrections. We need summer youth employment, mental health, headstart and tutoring.”
