A photo of a woman smiling next to a bouquet of yellow roses and above it a quote from her: ‘If you’re caught up in something that’s very detrimental to society, I think that you should die.’ Naomi Villalba, 75, Dallas
There is something so deeply disturbing about this:
Just the NYTimes checking in with ordinary Americans about whether the government killing people it accuses of a crime with no trial is okay or not.
That combo of quote and photo alone is some straight-up dark @stephenking.bsky.social fantasy
Did not realize it was different. So confusing how this is all marketed. Or I’m just not paying enough attention. :) Thanks!

"The two men killed as they floated holding onto their capsized boat .. DID NOT APPEAR TO HAVE RADIO OR OTHER COMMUNICATIONS DEVICES, the top military official overseeing the strike told lawmakers."

For a little under an hour — 41 minutes, according to a separate US official — Bradley and the rest of the US military command center discussed what to do as they watched the men struggle to overturn what was left of their boat, the sources said.
Ultimately, Bradley told lawmakers, he ordered a second strike to destroy the remains of the vessel, killing the two survivors, on the grounds that it appeared that part of the vessel remained afloat because it still held cocaine, according to one of the sources. The survivors could hypothetically have floated to safety, been rescued, and carried on with trafficking the drugs, the logic went.

This entire exercise is an absurd, imaginary world for legal experts.
That's because the truth is:
It's not an armed conflict.
The laws of war thus don't apply.
The more restrictive rules of human rights apply.
It's extrajudicial killing under that law.

All of the 80 people killed thus far are wanton murders slain under illegal orders. All of them.
I want us to hang on to the fact that the people who were murdered were just civilians out in boats, most likely fishermen, who had never even heard the sketchy conclusions of American officials for which they were executed, much less had a chance to defend themselves.

This article is devastating.
Earlier this month, a 15-year-old died by suicide the day after posting about a substitute teacher insisting on misgendering him.
Suicide can have many contributing factors. His family is speaking out about bullying and misgendering as two.

This prosecution is shining one hell of a spotlight on what look like some egregious systemic failures in Ontario’s child protection systems.
Supreme Court of Canada's "ruling clarified that people who make a potentially life-saving call — along with the people who are overdosing and others at the scene — are protected from being arrested or charged for drug possession, even if police [..] see drugs."

Missed this amid the Cheney/election news but this is the 16th strike since September 2 and at least 66 people are dead. This is notable in part because it's the first since the Nov. 3 60-day mark under the War Powers act.
