I am, tremendously unfortunately, a so-far passportless Australian. Chat, is it a silly idea to play War of Rights to get a sense of Eastern theatre trees and terrain? I'm having trouble grasping what trees and forests should look like from most photos.

Doing a lot of care and maintenance at work to get ready for the new season, a fantastic time to catch up on podcasts, last two @toofatlardies.bsky.social episodes. Plenty of food for thought. Some of the stuff that was said reinforced my opinion that scenario design is an art in itself.

With this in mind (and I'm late to the party) but shout out to The Perfect Captain also. Map campaign systems with miniatures wargames in mind, with some historical context and reading material given, fantastic stuff.

What I think CoC's Pint Size Campaigns do well in terms of accessibility is they allow everyone beginner up to gain series of linked games out of two platoons plus support. Scenario design an art in itself, also the deep knowledge required to know of actions suitable for platoon level campaigns.

New edition of This is Not a Test has piqued my interest, good old school skirmish action in a similar vein of Necromunda, but D10 based and a post-apocalyptic setting.

Easier with widespread internet use to network and research now than ever before, but I think the ease of the store environment closes some off from considering all options.

I've long thought people that claim to be interested in indie & historical miniatures wargames but don't network are pretending to be interested in bad faith, but I just had an engagement with somebody in a large urban centre that seemed genuine.

I also hope somebody with better rules writing chops than I pushes that theme out to renaissance fantasy in one of the future Lard Magazines.

I've been reading some of the batreps on mogsymakes.net, I am quietly hopeful that Midgard will supply what I have yet to find in fantasy rules. Modern mechanics, command and control, and thought as to how those mechanics serve the theme. The theme being sagaic historicals through to fantasy.

doing some menial work my mind returned to the matter of Chain of Command's Pint Sized Campaigns which for me are THE standard for accessibility in historical wargaming, it's unfortunate such campaign books are not more common

Fantastic! I get decision paralysis from looking at AB figures. 15mm is a practical scale for WWII but the gorgeous AB models put out by an Aussie company keeps me from making a decision.

One thing I really appreciate about historical miniatures wargames is the effort that goes into crafting historically accurate and thematic rules. Even light-hearted rulesets often have a great deal of care and attention to how the mechanics serve the theme. Fantasy writers could learn a lot!

The Tactical Painter

@tacticalpainter.bsky.social's blog (thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com) got pushed as a "featured snippet" (Google's attempting to mitigate SEOed AI written crap ruining results?) when searching for CoC campaign info. Good! Had yet to look around it much and didn't realise it's such a great resource.

I figure this is something our forebears already had figured out, matrix games, kriegsspiel

moving to the west coast of tassie for work, not remote in mainland terms but I'll be busy enough with work I won't be able to get to the city much

will be more seriously investigating options for remote wargaming soon
