Let This Radicalize You Doing Justice: The Revolution of Rescue and Reciprocal Care is a practical and imaginative resource for activists and organizers building power in an era of destabilization and catastrophe.

For those who are interested, @prisonculture.bsky.social and I talk about political psychology and its role in organizing a bit in our book Let This Radicalize You.

I obviously have lots of ideas about that. (I've written a few things.) But I think people who want to make change really need to stop and think about how fragile the infrastructures of our respective realities really are, and what that means on the current terrain.

People want to label and judge their way to a better world. You can label and you can judge. That's fine. I do it too. But how do we move people who have the potential to participate in a harmful mass delusion and the harms associated with those delusions to do something else instead?

People don't like to think in these terms bc they want to sort people into categories of good and bad, and manufacture safety or ideal political outcomes on those terms, and that doesn't actually work. I'm not making excuses for people btw. I am talking about how different outcomes actually happen.

We have to be responsive to pattern-seeking amid uncertainty, efforts to make meaning while grappling with threats, dysregulation, and the effects of social isolation and coercion.

Movements have to offer structures and social responses that engage with the same conditions that lead to reactionary social delusions and the destructive actions and beliefs associated with them.

For those who are searching for explanatory patterns — which is something we all do, and do less reliably when we are experiencing a lot of fear or stress — the landscape is not great.

Delusions are associated with biased pattern detection amid uncertainty, efforts to make meaning while grappling with threats, stress-related dysregulation, and the aggravating effects of social isolation, coercion, and other stressors.

US politics make more sense when you recognize that a lot more people are susceptible to delusions than most folks probably assume.

In periods of collapse, people are more vulnerable to cults. I think about this all the time. The human mind craves simple explanations for complex problems. Closed belief systems promise certainty, belonging, and the prospect of control.
