We find it unacceptable that extremists like Ms. Minton can weaponize APLS Executive Board against librarians and library boards who have their communityโs best interests in mind.
17.06.2025 20:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
It appears Minton and Moms For Liberty would prefer that teens, who would be considered by the state mature enough to give birth and be parents, are not considered mature enough to access basic sex education and biology materials.
17.06.2025 20:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
We find it troubling that Ms. Minton is intent on keeping teens ignorant of factual information about sex and reproduction, including restricting education on how to protect themselves and how to make informed decisions.
17.06.2025 20:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Minton singles out a sex education book for teens titled โDoing Itโ, which gives frank and honest information to teens. The Fairhope Public Library Board found it to be age-appropriate for the young adult section.
17.06.2025 20:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
APLS Board Member and Moms For Liberty supporter Amy Dozier Minton, who challenged 30 inclusive books in her own local library, is demanding that the library move all fifteen of the targeted books despite the local boardโs decision.
17.06.2025 20:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Of the fifteen books, the Board made the decision to relocate 5 to the adult section, while the rest remain in the Young Adult section of the library. This demonstrates how the review process for challenged books is meant to be conducted, but it seems the goalpost has been moved once again.

Read Freely Alabama encourages Alabama librarians to seek legal advice if any Alabama government official uses this case to justify removing books outside of a courtroom.
29.05.2025 18:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
In short, the decision is not binding for Alabama, nor does it support Clean Up Alabama and other anti-library extremistsโ arguments for the Government Speech Doctrine.
29.05.2025 18:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Just to note, this argument has been roundly rejected by every other judge in other cases across the nation, including the Eighth Circuit Court, when used as justification for removing and banning books.
29.05.2025 18:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Seventeen judges make up the Fifth Circuit Court, and only seven agreed that the Government Speech Doctrine may be used to defend a library's viewpoint-based book removals.
29.05.2025 18:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
...essentially arguing that books in the library express the governmentโs views and therefore it is not unconstitutional to remove the books), only a minority of judges concurred with the doctrine.
29.05.2025 18:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Second, while some Alabama anti-library extremists, including APLS Board members, are celebrating this ruling as vindication of their radical argument supporting the Government Speech Doctrine...
29.05.2025 18:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
First, the Fifth Circuit's ruling doesn't apply in any states except for Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
29.05.2025 18:18 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Radical rulings are always concerning, but context is important. First, the ruling doesn't apply in any state except for Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Anti-library bills dead in 2025 Alabama Legislative Session
Supporting the Right to Read in All Alabama Libraries
For the past 3 months, thousands of Alabamians have joined Read Freely Alabama to work tirelessly to ensure that two bills that would have had devastating effects on libraries, HB4 and SB6, did not pass.

John Wahl is gaslighting Alabamians about library content: op-ed
Itโs time we stand up to Wahl and demand his resignation.
We all want to protect children from inappropriate and sexually explicit material but it isnโt illegal for minors to read books on puberty, sex education, consent, or other complex topics. But thatโs exactly what APLS Chair John Wahl is trying to do.

Possible books affected by this expansion include the classic teen novel โThe Outsidersโ (mentions of alcohol use, violence and child abuse), as well as teen fiction like โHarry Potter,โ โThe Hunger Gamesโ, โDivergentโ, and the โLeft Behindโ series due to their depictions of violence.

Last week the state library board decided to accelerate their censorship efforts by expanding the definition of โinappropriate for childrenโ to possibly include books with excessive violence, excessive drug use, things that are inappropriate for children that society recognizes on a daily basis.โ
