We find it unacceptable that extremists like Ms. Minton can weaponize APLS Executive Board against librarians and library boards who have their community’s best interests in mind.

It appears Minton and Moms For Liberty would prefer that teens, who would be considered by the state mature enough to give birth and be parents, are not considered mature enough to access basic sex education and biology materials.

We find it troubling that Ms. Minton is intent on keeping teens ignorant of factual information about sex and reproduction, including restricting education on how to protect themselves and how to make informed decisions.

Minton singles out a sex education book for teens titled “Doing It’, which gives frank and honest information to teens. The Fairhope Public Library Board found it to be age-appropriate for the young adult section.

APLS Board Member and Moms For Liberty supporter Amy Dozier Minton, who challenged 30 inclusive books in her own local library, is demanding that the library move all fifteen of the targeted books despite the local board’s decision.

Of the fifteen books, the Board made the decision to relocate 5 to the adult section, while the rest remain in the Young Adult section of the library. This demonstrates how the review process for challenged books is meant to be conducted, but it seems the goalpost has been moved once again.

Read Freely Alabama encourages Alabama librarians to seek legal advice if any Alabama government official uses this case to justify removing books outside of a courtroom.

In short, the decision is not binding for Alabama, nor does it support Clean Up Alabama and other anti-library extremists’ arguments for the Government Speech Doctrine.

Just to note, this argument has been roundly rejected by every other judge in other cases across the nation, including the Eighth Circuit Court, when used as justification for removing and banning books.

Seventeen judges make up the Fifth Circuit Court, and only seven agreed that the Government Speech Doctrine may be used to defend a library's viewpoint-based book removals.

Possible books affected by this expansion include the classic teen novel “The Outsiders” (mentions of alcohol use, violence and child abuse), as well as teen fiction like “Harry Potter,” “The Hunger Games”, “Divergent”, and the “Left Behind” series due to their depictions of violence.

Last week the state library board decided to accelerate their censorship efforts by expanding the definition of “inappropriate for children” to possibly include books with excessive violence, excessive drug use, things that are inappropriate for children that society recognizes on a daily basis.”
