You can only hit his mistakes and he doesn't make that many

In 2023 he made 31 starts and threw 163.1 innings if you include the 8 starts he made in the minors, which you should. Nobody would have put that many innings on his arm in 21 bc he did not throw any competitive innings in 20 (covid) and he got hurt in 22 &24.

01.08.2025 14:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

One of them is when he was pitching in like a 110 heat index and I don't know if im sure the most recent one is completely unrelated to his elbow needing surgery. I certainly dont think he had that moniker going into the off season considering he threw over 110 innings the last 2 years.

01.08.2025 14:53 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I dont know if I'd call Grayson "injury prone" and more "it was his turn to need elbow surgery" but he certainly knew Grayson wasn't all right during the off season where he did not do nearly enough.

My hopes for next season are conditional on Mike Elias being fired or otherwise told what to do. I do not trust him to be in charge of a team who wants to win because of his particular hang ups with offering long term deals. If he remains we are wasting time. If he goes we'll see what we get.

01.08.2025 14:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Why is the talent not performing Elias' fault? Well in the last 2 years most of the coaching staff that made that 23 team win so much has been fired or forced out. These coaches were instrumental to the development of these young players in the majors and are now gone. Its Elias' fault.

Needs: front end starting pitcher x 2 (he knew about Bradish and Means), closer

Brought in: Burnes, Kimbrel

Grade: not enough

25
Needs: FRONT END STARTING PITCHING, corner OF, bullpen help, backup catcher

Brought in: Sugano, Morton, Kittredge, Laureano, Oneill, Carlson

Grade: NOT ENOUGH

On the Elias front its 2 pronged first the roster.

In the last 3 off seasons is there one where he did "enough"? Let's go season by season to see if he did

23
Needs: front end pitcher, back up catcher, big bat, infielder

Brought in: Gibson, McCann, O'Hearn, Frazier

Grade: not enough

The returns:

There's a couple of guys that are exciting but realistically none of them will help a team where Adley and Gunnar are on their Rookie deals. That on its own is pretty damning especially when the upper minors don't have high quality pitchers who will help in the next 2 years.

I just wanted to put my trade deadline thoughts out here before things get wonky.

First and foremost it is Mike Elias' fault that the Orioles are in this spot. I will go more into that but I wanted to acknowledge that. You can talk about talent not performing but that can also be his fault.

Jim Devlin has been dead for 140 years and I dont know if his descendants care but if you're including great players who changed baseball in the hall even with their gambling connections and throwing games then Jim Devlin needs yo be first on that list

14.05.2025 16:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

He threw a few games at the end of the season to make the money that the team wasn't paying him while being genuinely the best pitcher alive. His 1876 season is the 4th best season a pitcher has ever had.

14.05.2025 16:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Why was he a crooked player? Because the team was not paying him anywhere near what he deserved because somehow their budget shrank by about $3000 (about 1 million today) for the year and the guy running the team was also known to be crooked.

14.05.2025 16:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Jim Devlin put up 32 war mostly over 2 seasons as a pitcher. He was also a respectable hitter before that and if he was allowed to play baseball until his untimely death at 34 from TB he probably would have a similar WAR to other great 19th century players.

14.05.2025 16:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Jim Devlin is the only player to ever throw every pitch for a team for a season even if it's only 61 games. He also probably invented the Sinker which was called a "drop pitch". He also put up a respectable 81 ops+ that season when again he was throwing games. (He had a 115 the year prior)

14.05.2025 16:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

First off Jim Devlin has some fucking insane stats. He posted an ERA of 2.25 in the 1877 season. 3 fun facts about that season
1 he put up over 13 WAR which was not even close to his career high of 17.7
2 he threw EVERY PITCH for the Louisville Grays that year
3 he was throwing games

14.05.2025 16:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

If other people who bet on baseball are getting into the hall then nobody deserves it more than Jim Devlin. His bref page is here and I'm going to make his case www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/de...

Are you asking for a player who got traded to another team and found success in a new role? Because Michael King is that. But teams that have all star caliber talent trade them to teams that can use that talent. Thats how all sports work.

08.05.2025 23:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I do not know why you keep bringing up Garcia. Its very strange.

My argument is also that teams trade guys before they would become all star caliber players and that teams dont construct rosters the way you claim they could. The lack of an example of a team doing that IS evidence.

08.05.2025 23:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Im arguing that no team would ever construct a roster the way you are proposing and you find the fact that no team since free agency was invented has to be counter-evidence?

08.05.2025 23:32 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

No because all star caliber players get traded before they ride the pine for years and years

08.05.2025 23:27 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Not if they dont get the opportunity. If you never trade them and they're bench players for 6 years when they could be all stars they will literally lose out on tens of millions of dollars

08.05.2025 23:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I didn't say anything about them but Ramon Urias is one of the best hitters on the team right now. It's also still wasting value by not trading those guys for the pitching Elias can't get others others

08.05.2025 22:32 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Buddy you have 5 infielders on there even if you put Mayo at 1b that's still too many. The rest of them all play good defense, trade some of them

08.05.2025 22:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The Mariners absolutely would have traded Logan Gilbert in the 23-24 off season for Kjerstad and Norby, probably less than that tbh, and we would be a better team today for it

08.05.2025 22:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0
