'UK has too many ADHD diagnoses' doesn't pass the smell test as explanation for UK's rising number of young people not in education, employment or training - ADHD diagnoses have gone up at similar rates across our peers, but the UK's rising NEETs are a UK issue.

Thereโ€™s a type of LLM advert which essentially depicts
1) a person using an LLM for a task it absolutely can perform
2) but a person who is qualified to double check its working wouldnโ€™t need to.
Feels like this is the type of โ€œAI misalignmentโ€ we should really worry about!

Well, for one, the UK has a highly competitive higher education sector that is closely tied to innovation, and yet the past set of governments don't value academic institutions as value producers.

The other part is leaving the EU has basically damaged the British ability to trade goods...

My brother in Christ, reindustrialization is based on international capital flows, not dumbass ideas to move down the value chain by turning colleges into vocational schools. You do realize that modern industry is almost always *high* skilled automation?

Read your Michael Pettis, you utter clown.

Anti-bullying campaigns worked and are good which is why I am genuinely rankled by people why say stuff like "bullying works" glibly

Apart from a few angry posts on here, why will this be cost free? Whereโ€™s the stigma gone? Was it ever a genuine one? Have social norms or the rules changed? This is far from the first time heโ€™s written or said something like this and heโ€™ll be on the BBC again soon.

every time Argentineans post their little crybully rants about the Falklands it's a reminder of the mentality that resulted in their incompetent fascist junta getting hundreds of their own conscript soldiers killed in an unprovoked invasion.

Russia pounds Ukraine with missiles, hitting civilian infrastructure and killing dozens of civilians, and this is the BBC headline when Ukraine strikes a legitimate military target in response:

Reminder that these towns are the homes of the people the Russians claim to be "liberating".

I don't think it's all of it by any measure but I do absolutely believe that the political media's raging anti-intellectual streak has got worse with time and has ended up influencing the way MPs talk, and what they choose to talk/think about

Also recognize that this unambiguous use of the military to commit murder of helpless noncombatants as they fought for life is a direct reflection of the virulent white supremacy that has seized our government, where every Latino man is a gangbanger in a de facto state of war against White America

I know who Nus Ghani MP is - not because we always agree - but because sheโ€™s been serving her constituency (as well as lewks) since 2015.

Who the hell is Lucy White?!

Ah, a quick google search reveals her as a rentagob for GB โ€˜news.โ€™

I know which one is qualified to chair the budget debate.

All the supposedly progressive people saying 'Nigel Farage's racism doesn't matter. His fans love it'.

It matters whether the leader of the party leading all the opinion polls is an outright racist. It matters if he called black people 'wogs' and said 'gas them' to Jews. Not everything is a game

It's always a disingenuous bait-and-switch. Contrive an argument to oppose a specific trans-related thing, then invent a completely different one for the next trans-related thing, and so on. No common theme or consistency but transphobia.

The BBC makes itself *extremely* hard to love with this stuff. Iโ€™ve worked in more than one small newsroom thatโ€™s discovered to its immense frustration that the countryโ€™s biggest news org has stolen its work with no credit whatsoever.

You get the reverse of this on the right, where someone dislikes capitalism, but believes that what they object to is 'modernity'.

A regular criticism I get from that kind of person is to say that 'we have tried this for the last 30 years and look where we are now', which even before 'I mean, 2025 is not so bad in the sweep of human history'...why do you think globalisation is a 30 year thing??

24.11.2025 13:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 84    ๐Ÿ” 6    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 10    ๐Ÿ“Œ 2

Global History is one of the most exciting areas of critical work at the moment for precisely the reason that it's blowing open parochialism across the whole field, and shattering base assumptions about today's world. It's brilliant.
