The political argument here really misses the forest for the trees, IMO. They’re already toxically unpopular - taking this hit by finally doing what is necessary now at least allows for a scenario in which the country is in a much rosier state by 2029 and people are again willing to vote for them.

Basic problem is that UK is a medium-sized, open economy that runs a deficit at a moment that is increasingly ill-advised and that public services don’t meet most people’s expectations.
