Where's the premier while MLAs rush through an all-night debate on stripping Albertans of their Charter rights?

An airport lounge, waiting for a flight to Saudi Arabia. She didn't even bother to show up for the vote.

I remember when conservatives turfed premiers for this level of hubris.

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.

Bill 1 asserts a power that all provinces have had for 90 years. Entirely symbolic and meaningless.

Coal royalties in 2024/25 were $15.5 million. The government has now paid out more than $200 million in claims to Australian mining companies for bungling this file.

The long count: Alberta communities prepare to tally ballots by hand | CBC News Alberta municipalities are in for a long night β€” and in many cases, days β€” to complete the more complicated process of counting every ballot on election day by hand, rather than machine.

When the election is long past and you still don't know who your councillor is, please remember it's because Danielle Smith's base doesn't like electronic vote tabulators (which are accurate, have been used for decades, and saved time and money).

The Conservative Party has lost its way. It needs to stop mimicking the exact same US narratives and stop creating fear and using exaggeration to make a case for being in power. This is Canada. We are smarter and not easily fooled and we have the benefit of seeing what’s happening to the south.

When municipal election results are delayed on Monday, remember that the elimination of electronic tabulators, at the cost of millions of taxpayer dollars to Edmonton and Calgary residents, was done by the UCP - Ric McIver - with no consultation, simply to appease Take Back Alberta.

In responses to LWC, both sitting councillors Sonya Sharp (who is running for mayor) and Dan McLean (who is running again for councillor) say that the $87 billion is being funded by taxpayers.

Both sat in the council meeting where they were told this was not so at the end of term.

Sharp, McLean, Wong and others, if elected, will be responsible for more expensive deals and sprawl. Is everybody ready for MUCH higher property taxes?

As teachers are only days away from a strike because the UCP refuse to address the issues of classroom sizes and complexity…

We couldn’t help but think that what they need is a hero to take the education minister over his knee…

We found that hero.

Alberta to use notwithstanding clause on its three transgender laws: memo Alberta Premier Danielle Smith plans to invoke the Charter’s notwithstanding clause this fall on three laws affecting transgender people.

The use of the notwithstanding clause in Alberta should be a line in the sand for everyone.

Wielding such immense constitutional power to preemptively strip Charter rights from one of our most vulnerable minorities is a dangerous and cynical act.

Rights aren't a buffet you can pick from.

Alberta government promises to fight for school pronoun law amid legal challenge | CBC News Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative government says it will fight to defend a court challenge to its school pronoun law.

My son’s school has so many students, so little funding that instrumental music has only enough instruments that only half the students can learn instruments for half the year, the other half they learn β€œbody music” but sure lets use finite resources to fight this priority www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Braid: UCP government's cash clawback and AISH upheaval seem heartless Danielle Smith's UCP government is imposing draconian change on benefits for disabled, at the same time they claw back cash.

The Smith government's AISH upheaval, combined with cash clawback, is deeply traumatic to Alberta's most vulnerable people. Column.

The Ugly Underbelly of Alberta Separatism For the Smith government and the Alberta separatist movement, there’s no shortage of grievances against Ottawa to nurseβ€”everything from environmental policy, to equalization, to the structure of natio...

"By turning antipathy toward immigration into yet another grievance against Ottawa, they are creating space for Albertans to indulge in their worst inclinations.

To have a panel led by the premier indulging in these ideas is simply shameful.": Lisa Young

The UCP is facing 8 investigations into corruption, plus no fewer than 3 major public sector union strikes (all of their own making).

The affordability crisis looms, as does a trade war with the US.

Wildfires & measles are raging.

And the premier chose now to clear a path for a separation vote.
