Henrietta Lacks
Henrietta Lacks was a Black woman whose (ovarian) cancer cells were used wo her/her family’s consent. Her cells are what would become the HeLa cell, the first immortalized human cell line & one of the most important in medical research.

A classic black-and-white portrait photograph of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer, taken in a classroom or lecture setting. She stands in front of a large chalkboard filled with handwritten nuclear physics equations, nuclear mass data, and element symbols (including notations like I¹²⁹, Cr⁵², and various alpha, beta, and gamma values). Goeppert Mayer has a thoughtful, focused expression as she gazes upward slightly, with her lips pursed in concentration. She wears a patterned dress with short-sleeved matching jacket with a geometric black-and-white design, a pearl necklace, and her hair styled in soft curls. In her hands, she holds a wooden slide rule.
Theoretical physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer died #OTD in 1972.
She shared the 1963 #Nobel Prize in Physics (w/Wigner & Jensen) "for their discoveries concerning nuclear shell structure." She was the second woman to win a Nobel in #physics. (Who was the first?)

---Mark Twain---
Yes he was handsome. But give some credit to the meticulous attention his wife Anna Murray Douglass paid to his care, his home, & the presentation of his garments. It was Anna, a free woman who he met in Baltimore, who out of her meager savings gave FD the money for his train ride to escape.

She has curly dark hair piled up, a serious expression, and wears a high-necked dress with elaborate floral embroidery on the bodice. As the first woman to officially attend a Dutch university and earn a medical doctorate in the Netherlands (graduating in 1879), she became one of the country's first female doctors. In 1882, she opened the world's first birth control clinic in Amsterdam, advocated for women's suffrage, better working conditions for women, the regulation of prostitution, and international peace efforts.

Today's Black Fact:
Jane Bolin was the first Black woman to attend Yale Law School in 1931 and became the first Black female judge in the United States. Thanks to her leadership employers were moved to hire people based on their skills, as opposed to discriminating against them because of race!
The aurora last night in Beaver, Alaska was just incredible. This is a real-time video (not sped up) of the crazy motion I saw. Also, look how BRIGHT it is, wow!

i don’t know if it’s the jaunty bow tie or what but i cannot stop laughing at this
