Smart people who are conservative definitely exist. People intellectually capable of contributing if they were in academia. They mostly aren’t in academia, they’re making money somewhere, and the ones that are don’t need ideological affirmative action to get hired.

This is why I’m extremely skeptical of any attempt to add ‘ideological diversity’ to academia, despite thinking that there are fields where some version of it would genuinely epistemologically healthy: I simply do not believe that modern conservatism actually can supply people who are not this:

Republicans will have trouble selling it as a bipartisan compromise since they've taken such a hardline approach against negotiations, it will pretty clearly be perceived by the public as Democrats getting something by fighting that they would not have gotten otherwise.

I think this is true, but I do think there's a counter-argument to be made that the (earned!) stereotype of Dems as not fighting and not winning is so damaging that getting a clear tactical victory is more electorally valuable than saving Reps from shooting their own dicks is electorally damaging.
