There's always the option of saying "The Drug Monkey lab is supported by NIH grants X, Y and Z" so you cite grants that support your lab (which benefits readers IMO) but not necessarily which ones supported this manuscript. Does this bother the NIH do you think?

Acknowledgements serve many purposes, for many audiences, and it annoys me that the NIH thinks the section is part of their bean counting mechanism and therefore they can dictate what it contains. I thought that's what progress reports were for.
