Aren't they both better than average candidates, from a progressive viewpoint? If not, where do they fall short?

You make a good point, but I think the Left could make the same point against the moderates.
Moderates have rarely actively supported leftist candidates, even against Rs (e.g. Mamdani).
They could easily be perceived as insisting that everyone do what THEY want.
We all need to work together.
