The 2025 state of the climate report: a planet on the brink We are hurtling toward climate chaos. The planet's vital signs are flashing red. The consequences of human-driven alterations of the climate are no longer

In our Climate Report my coauthors and I say: We are hurtling toward climate chaos. The planet's vital signs are flashing red. Consequences of human-driven alterations of the climate are no longer future threats but are here now. Read report here doi.org/10.1093/bios...

There has literally never been a universal basic income trial program that didn't deliver real and measurable results above and beyond any other form of social welfare, and every time another concludes with the same findings the powers that be go "interesting! Anyway," and pretend it wouldn't work.

There’s nothing wrong with healthy living.

It just won’t prevent disability. It won’t make you bulletproof.

Telling people to β€œget healthier” if they want to afford healthcare is effectively telling sick people to accept being left to die.

Healthcare for all.

Human populations are exploding. We've added 800M new humans since Paris 2015. 10% more humans in 10 years. Children now.

We lose min 6% of insect biomass in protected nature reserves. 50% of global biomass loss in 10 years. The stuff on the right disappears faster than our populations & GDPs grow.

I’m still thinking about β€œquiet, piggy.” No president should be able to speak to a member of the press that way and remain president. That moment encapsulates how vile, misogynistic, and horrible that man is.

I have relatively great health insurance. One of my kids needed a surgery this year. 2k doesn’t even cover the co-pay.

British and Australian chemists have discovered a powerful new antibiotic called pre-methylenomycin C lactone, hiding in a well-known soil bacterium. This molecule kills drug-resistant bacteria without triggering resistance. buff.ly/YlXaONo

At the same time I was just getting into computational chemistry which was the major theme of that work. So it meshed really well.

Been a fan of Egan since. This one looks like it’s going to include climate fiction (cli-fi) as well. Hence the endorsement by KSR, I’m assuming.

Next on my to read list- Greg Eganβ€˜s Perihelion Summer

I’ve enjoyed Egan since I picked up Perturbation City back in 1999 at the Uni of Western Australia bookstore. I’d never read sci-fi that was so hard on the Science piece before.
