An innate drive to save a life
In mice, two brain regions drive the impulse to revive an unconscious companion
Bit late to the game here, but had a really fun time writing this perspective piece with @neurozoe.bsky.social about a couple of fascinating papers now out in Science. Massive kudos to the Hong and Zhang groups for their work www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

A few weeks ago I was asked to write an obituary for my PhD mentor, Larry Young. He was the torchbearer for oxytocin research, a giant in our field. He had a gift for connecting people. His loss has been devastating for many of us. Goodbye Larry.

Short gif showing a vole climbing over a wall to get to its pair bonded partner
When bonds are lost, this partner-enhanced dopamine eventually erodes, potentially laying the groundwork for forming a new bond. A big thanks to Yulong Li
for generously sharing GRABda sensors! And to the voles who were pros at working to reunite with their partner!

Excited to share our latest work out in Current Bio led by
Dr. Anne Pierce. We found dopamine is required for seeking out social interaction in monogamous voles, and that a pair bonded partner elicits greater accumbal dopamine release than does a stranger. authors.elsevier.com/a/1iPzr3QW8S...
