sega saturn strip mahjong eroge is so neat. two year period where sega had their guidelines lax enough to allow full frontal nudity on officially licensed games, and most of the games that take advantage of it are mahjong. its so surreal seeing nudity like that on a mainstream console from that era

switch online expansion pass really bugging me right now because i would TOTALLY pay 8 or 15 dollars for alien soldier virtual console on switch right now but 50 dollars a year is WAYYYY too much for me to justify. i'd only want to play like 4 games on the expansion pass (all of them treasure games)

last night i worked up the courage to bang my head against alien soldier for 2 hours until the game clicked and then it DID and i mainlined repeated attempts of the game for another 3 hours nonstop (only made it to stage 9). nobody does it like treasure

surprisingly, i didnt like this game much when i first played it but once i got the hang of the hyper system and how to build it quick i fell in love with the game completely. HOPEFULLY i can score a 1-all soon-ish, so far i can make it to mid-stage 4 in 1 credit

man i really need to give marathon another go. i remember kinda enjoying the first bit i played but because i first played it on a near minimum spec 68k macintosh it was quite janky LOL i'll have to give it another go on one of my beefier macintosh rigs sooner or later

its hard to pin down what its missing but gut reaction has me saying the fantastic cast dynamic with one another is missing alongside the snappy writing (might just be the NIS america localization). the intoxicating atmosphere is THERE and on PAPER the cast is great but its just not there as a whole

oh and i'll finish up sakura wars V since i started that a week ago. i don't know if i'll play shin honestly since i flat out don't have a PS4 and V is already really showing some weak spots in the formula, the game on paper has everything that makes sakutai enthralling but its missing SOMETHING....

next year i'm planning to lean into visual novels even harder, and enjoy a few other of the greats of the medium since i'm loving the medium
planning to enjoy:

- finish up muvluv (hndr pulled me away) and move on to alternative
- try rance out? i might not like it but who knows

if i had to pick one single game of the year it'd have to be hundred line. even though full honesty im adoring umineko more than hndr already (even at the halfway point), hndr was so special to experience at launch alongside everyone else not knowing what to expect. really special place in my heart

rhythm games were very fruitful this year, i didn't play as much iidx as i'd have liked to but i dove hard into maimai dx and got rainbow so i'd say thats a nice milestone. mental has been too iffy for me to grind otoge consistently so im not planning to jump back in with 2026 or anything

umineko was a big end of year upset, out of nowhere i just felt Ready for it and then went for it and in ~4 weeks i blazed out all of the question arcs. wtf. im planning to start answer arcs to ring in the new year so i can take some time to stop and theorize before jumping in to the conclusion

mostly a year of arcade and VN focus.
arcade side was all sega console love. so much time on the saturn and dreamcast playing fantastic STGs, i'm very glad the genre clicked with me

VN wise kazutaka kodaka had me by the balls w/ hndr and shuten, and sega enamored me with sakutai. both fantastic

might also because i dont bring headphones to the cab and just rely on the speakers since the arcade i frequent is quiet for the most part but still. idk maybe next session i'll try flicking off the hitsounds just for fun and see how it goes!!! i just need to tear myself away from umineko first

songs in maimai sound SO different ingame compared to the ost releases just because ingame you have to deal with loud ass CLAPCALCPACLAPCLACPACLCPALCPAC else you'll lose time pretty easy thanks to the nature of the game so hearing the OST mix of many songs is like. wtf. this is completely new. what

hardest game i have played in my life. i still can barely quantify my feelings toward the game. the peaks of MN is the peak of videogames but the bad parts are inhuman torture. 10/10 game i'd recommend to nobody except complete sickos

i'm ~5 hours in so far and even though its majority exposition its all fantastic, i cannot WAIT for things to truly start going down but i'm relishing in these cute slice of life scenes and moments of interpersonal tension before things explode
