big issue is The Language Barrier especially with how 90s JP PC games are majority visual novels and adjacent but i guess its a good motivator to sit my ass down and actually learn japanese

i really need to scoop up one of the japanese retro PCs at some point. they're all quite expensive so i'll need to save for a bit but owning a PC-98 or X68000 or FM towns and being able to give their libraries a go would be SO neat, the computers have such a unique niche

the game is rushed and it clearly shows in its length and lower budget but the developers poured just as much love into the game as the first three. ending act spared no expense and is genuinely outstanding. never forgetting this franchise as long as i live

what romancing saga and battle garegga demonstrate is that if you take a normal videogame and attach it to a black box that you must appease with mysterious rituals or else it kills you, you are left with a masterpiece

already on warrior difficulty ive simultaneously fallen in love with the game completely and grew an unfathomable hatred for it and i think thats really beautiful this game is so perfectly imperfect and i wouldn't want it any other way even though the bosses make me want to pull my hair out

it is a little silly at times e.g sakura wars 3 i just now finished episode 9 and entire team is like yay the world is saved everything is fine now all is well in the world we can just relax from here and enjoy ourselves! okay now please insert disc 3

games being multi-disc is such a special feeling that really cant be replicated today. like, this game is so vast and grand and has so much in it that they had to go out of their way to make more discs for each copy

especially fun when disc swaps are after huge moments ingame
