I never fail to find something new when I go out in nature πΏ
In a few months I start a new job as a nature reserve intern so in the meantime, I'm brushing up on my invert ID skillsπͺ²

green beetle with thick thighs on the white petals of an oxeye daisy
same green, swollen-thighed beetle, this time walking on a white person's hand. it's about the length of a fingernail
news just in!! meet the beetle who never skips leg day π¦΅
the swollen-thighed beetle! πͺ²
(Oedemera nobilis)
found in western Europe, the males of this species have really thick thighs and you'll often find them on open-faced flowers like the oxeye daisy pictured on the left here

Moss on a tree stump
Photo of some bark. Liverwort in the foreground, a clump of moss in the background
Tufted moss on a branch.
A close up of leafy liverwort You can see how it branches and creates 'y' shapes. Some liverworts are only one cell thick!
today's selection of bryophytes!
(mosses and liverworts, see alt text for more info)
and believe it or not, even this is an over simplification ππ
11.03.2025 16:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Photo of some vibrant green moss
A close up of the original photo to highlight the reddish sporophyte, standing solitary and upright.
how do mosses reproduce?
through this little guy! they use what is called a sporophyte to release spores π look closely and you can see the capsule at the top of the solitary stalk (seta) which is where the spores are. the capsules have a neat little lid too to control when they disperse spores
oh nooo ππ there are so many different types on there as well!
11.03.2025 14:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0(just be careful, their needle-like leaves are very sharp and you don't want a nasty spine to the nose π¬)
11.03.2025 13:54 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A photo of gorse. It's a green spiky shrub which has beautiful yellow flowers. The sky behind is blue.
did you know: when gorse flowers are in the sun, they smell like coconut π₯₯!
next time you're near some, give them a little sniff and think about a chilled, piΓ±a colada πΉ
