Q: did I really quit my job to write books?

A: that wasn't the only reason, but it was among them, yes

Q: have I done this before? Do I know what I'm doing?

A: this isn't my first book, but this is the first I have hopes will see the light of day. So... no.

here it is. Here is the (redacted) first draft of my contemporary fantasy novel, working title "Firewalls"

now to turn this pile of words into something coherent. then revise it a few more times. Then find an agent to find me a publisher. Long path ahead, but the first step is done.

I am SO close to being done with v0* of my ~*~super sekret side** project~*~ that it is driving me crazy

*v0 meaning it won't be ready for public consumption, but I'll finally be willing to talk about it

**not sure what a side project is when I don't have paid employment, but whatever

Does anyone have any handy links to interviews or blogs about what it's like to go through the process of raising a seed round?

(not asking because I want to do so myself, I have other reasons for wanting to know)

ESPHome is the neatest, most useful piece of software I've encountered in a long time

ESPHome + Flipper + bunches of esp32s and RF transmitters + zigbee wall buttons = no more single-purpose remotes to lose or take up space

With the way my life is right now I probably won't even get to fly domestically before those are phased out. A girl can dream, though!

(I still have the KLM house thing you gave me on my desk πŸ™‚)

First DNF of the year: Marlon James's "Black Leopard, Red Wolf." Either I'm just not in the right place for this one at the moment, or it's an intentionally-confusing book where everyone speaks entirely in riddles, and also it's completely about genitalia.

3: Caroline O'Donoghue's "The Rachel Incident" (fiction, 2023). 4/5. I think I just really like books about messy, morally-reprehensible 20-something women in non-American settings.

2: Hannah Grace's "Icebreaker" (romance, 2022). 1/5. Wouldn't have finished if I wasn't trying to find out the appeal of "hockey romance." I think I figured it out (hockey players: hot, sociable, can fight; team: found family + spinoff potential) but my life is worse overall for having read this.

My first finish of the year was Shannon Chakraborty's The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (fantasy, 2023.) 2.5/5. The plot was bad and the characters suffered for it; the themes also felt like every other modern fantasy book and I was expecting different from historical fantasy. Fun enough, though.
