The History of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in 10 Stories

Catching up on podcasts and realized I had missed this from @peterdoggers.bsky.social & Arne Moll. An entertaining and very well researched history of the long-running chess tournament (now) in Wijk aan Zee. Great fun

Howard Amos recounts the life of photographer Dima Markov, whose lens exposed Russia’s raw beauty and brutality Dima Markov lived on the edges of Russian society, both as an artist and as a person. A former journalist turned photographer, he chronicled life in orphanages, back alleys, and desolate towns,…

In an excerpt from his new book, β€œRussia Starts Here: Real Lives in the Ruins of Empire,” @howardamos.bsky.social traces Dima Markov’s journey from a chaotic childhood to a life spent balancing photography, social work, and self-destruction.

A few hours after word broke of Navalny's death, we lost Dmitry Markov. His portraits are out of this world. Raw, warm, human.

I have never played bullet, on the belief that it would just make me worse at blitz, which I play (hypothetically) to some day be better at chess. But seems like maybe I should give it a try to at least get my wheels spinning faster

I was thinking today about how I am losing a lot of my blitz games from won positions in time scrambles. And sure enough. Aimchess used to have something similar but it didn't make the annual cull of chess websites I'm oversubscribed to. Very happy Lichess keeps cooking

very cool new feature from @lichess.org. in addition to the extensive analytics under "chess insights", there's a new "tutor" feature to measure things like speed, tactical awareness, resourcefulness, conversion rates etc. relative to similarly rated players

one of the great things about bluesky is joke understanding. just through the roof. you make a joke and people on bluesky are very cool about it. they nod and maybe throw a knowing wink. you'll love it
