once again I spent my Monday evening baking six dozen cookies to deliver to the food pantry tomorrow. they have a weekly hot lunch program for kids, and every kid gets a home-baked treat. now my kitchen smells great (pumpkin snickerdoodles) and I spent several hours offline. win-win-win

Modeling often requires making assumptions and design choices explicit. Experimenters could benefit from such transparent thinking abt the design and knowledge of the range of experiments they are foregoing. They could also benefit from understanding how data produced is conditional on the design.

In honor of Threads going all in on Edmund Fitzgerald lore this year, l'd like to share one of my strangest parenting moments. We took my then 4 year old son and his little buddy (whose special interest was maritime disasters) to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum in Detroit for a screening of a documentary about the wreck; we got some LOOKS when we showed up but the kids were great, save for one moment when my kid decided to LICK A PIECE OF RECOVERED DEBRIS as it was being passed around.

In case you wondered, there's probably exactly one person who has licked the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

First two episodes of Pluribus were interesting and promising! Excited for more. I never watched Breaking Bad or Better Call (by the time I heard Breaking was good I also heard it was violent and it didn't seem my vibe) so I think this is my first Vince Gilligan show since X-Files. Psyched for it!

Just in case you thought this was about trans athletes. This was solely about creating a fascist and racist gender bureaucracy over what constitutes being feminine enough to be considered a woman.

They're targeting cis women who may be intersex and banning them from sport.

I waited a day to say this bc I respected everyone's right to vent some anger, but *remember to focus on what you can do*. Whether it's defending your community, taking action around what you've been venting about, whatever β€” but don't let all of your energy get captured in the social media space.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Scarleteen has been doing sex ed for ALL since 1998 and is there with sex ed for ALL, to the tune of some five million visitors a month. The people who do this work deserve health care. I am so proud to support their work, and know many of you ALSO believe in sex ed for all, SO now's your moment.

A chart showing a 20 year price change between sectors.

Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart.

If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

The piece is excellent, but I want to highlight a valuable thought early in it: Literature does not change people. Life events change people. Trauma changes people. Catharsis changes people. Literature provides new mindsets to shape those changes, and outlets through which to choose how to change.
