iPhone 17 Pro Review: Walking Lines in Parallel Design doesn’t have to be beautiful

After many hours of writing, my iPhone 17 Pro review is finally here. The iPhone has not changed significantly this year, but that’s intentional, and the strategy works. The new design, while a downgrade in many ways, is popular. But overall, it’s just a great phone, and I wrote about why.

At this point, I'm convinced OpenAI's purpose is to make as much money by commercializing AI and frying the brains of every last soul in the world before inevitably falling to Google because it hasn't built anything remotely innovative since the one chatbot from 2022.

As you can probably tell from my relatively thin volume of link posts over the past month or so, I’ve been pretty busy with some work outside of writing. Therefore, this review had to be written over one weekend, a pretty short timeframe. Despite that, I think it turned out pretty well. Enjoy!

An addendum to this review: “Eldest Daughter” is one of Taylor Swift’s worst pieces.

This is by no means an indictment of Taylor Swift. I think it's better sound-wise than "Poets." I really disliked that album — it was too slow for me. But it's worse songwriting than Midnights, albeit with a slight advantage for not being by Jack Antonoff.

It's radio-worthy pop music. Good night.

That's broadly the problem with pop music in the 2020s. It's lazy songwriting coupled with mediocre melodies. There's a reason Swifties have referred to this album as "AI-generated." It sounds artificial. It has no soul. And it certainly doesn't sound like a talented person wrote the lyrics.

But she very clearly needs to stop making new albums every year. The songwriting is lazy. It sounds like a high school girl doodled some poems down in her Notes app and turned them into an album. It's hyper-produced pop music designed to go viral. This stuff will do numbers on the radio.

"The Life of a Showgirl" gets a 6/10. As a non-Swiftie, I actually think it's not too bad. And I'm really, really glad Jack Antonoff didn't produce it. It *sounds* new. You can really tell the variety of styles in songs like "Elizabeth Taylor." It's not the same-y shit she's been making since 2020.

Hot take: I think I really like the Netflix redesign. I liked it on iOS a few years ago and it looks nice on the TV.

I was really expecting the AirPods Pro 3 to struggle to hit the intro notes in "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service, but it actually does a pretty good job. Not as bright and sibilant as I expected. They really struggle with Chvrches, though.
