Meltdown on Morris
YouTube video by HFX by Bike Meltdown on Morris

Hey. Hi. Hello.

In this bonus HFX By Bike, I make a quick summary of the drama around the Morris Street bike lanes and then hop in to what the actual limitations and possibilities for the space are from a bike infrastructure perspective.

Any argument that relies on "common sense" or similar turn of phrases are always bullshit. Many things that are true or a better alternative; go directly against common sense

The car dealerships are definitely not paying $0 in taxes, I can see that Century Mazda on Robie paid ~$125k in taxes in 2023, and O'Regans Chevrolet on Robie paid ~360k

I’m going to be insufferable about this for 16 months. Suburbs don’t pay for the city. The city isn’t trying to annex a new tax base, they’re being swindled into taking on enormous liabilities.

I want something light and nimble, with a replaceable battery and less than $3k CAD. Some of the bikes I have landed on are the Aventon Pace 500.3, the Velotric T1 ST or Discover 2, the Ride1Up Roadster v3, and the Lectric Xpress

Does anyone have any experience with these bikes or brands?

I went to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor last weekend and rode an ebike for the first time on the beautiful carriage trails;

so of course all this week I've been pouring hours into researching everything available, watching YT videos and reviews, and gathering all the information I possibly can

Just remember that ~85 yrs ago Halifax served just about as many people with transit as today... With only a population ~80k, compared to ~500k in 2025

Morris St in Halifax looking east towards Queen. The eastbound lane has been closed and only the westbound lane is open. Traffic crews are directing traffic, but there is none in the photo.

Morris has been reduced to one lane for water work. I assume the port has shut down and ambulances are refusing to even try answering calls in the area.

It is required, since otherwise they would be basically silent. It helps prevent accidents and alerts people to the presence of the vehicle

I think this is an especially important point for #bikehfx and #halisky to keep in mind, especially in light of the Premier's disingenuous hand-wringing over emergency vehicle access on Morris St.: Protected bike lanes make ALL ROAD USERS safer. That includes our precious, sacred drivers.

Is it possible to close streets to cars and improve traffic in the surrounding area? The science says YES!

This video isn't about cars, but sites an example from NYC when they closed 42nd St and traffic improved significantly. It is counterintuitive and goes against "common sense", but it's true...

What are we thinking? This is your brain on cars - Halifax Examiner We live in a world largely designed for cars and around the needs of cars, and it is so pervasive most of the time we don't even notice.

It's really too bad people are falling for the distraction of bike lanes. Like I said, there are some people, including those in power, who create drama and drag everyone into it but they have other motives. You all personally know people like this. Don't fall for the drama, #Halifax.

The Troubled State of TTC Green Buses At its meeting on July 17, the TTC Board will receive an update on its Green Bus (eBus) program. Green Bus Program Update This is a long report, and some key information is buried down in the appen…

An obsession in certain circles with electrifying Canadian bus fleets with plug in battery electric buses (likely driven by policymakers who think somehow buses need to be more green, and that the transportation emission problem isn't almost entirely driven by driving) ...

Where is the JRTA? Where is the funding for BRT? Why are government workers going into the office every day? Why do we have staffing issues for transit? Why are we spending 1B$ on highways?

If Timmy cared about congestion, there are countless ways he could stay in his lane and make a difference

I think this is one of the best initiatives in the city, and is one of the reasons that Halifax is so amazing. We have amazing local artists and giving them a space to share that and beautify our public city spaces is great

On Morris street on my way to lunch. Who will save me from this overcrowded urban nightmare? What strongman can we raise up to fix this brutal landscape of despair?

First-past-the-post fuels toxic two-party politics, and we’re seeing the effects across the border with new threats of destructive economic tariffs.

It’s a warning we can avoid by embracing democracy and adopting proportional representation.

It’s time to demand change.
