@weisenthal.bsky.social need a Odd Lots episode on Dubai chocolate craze.

We have German companies making dubai chocolate and have US distribution to sell to American consumers. this is what tariffs are
gonna take away from us.

I think most people in finance who support trump do it with a rational (albeit immoral) perspective that Trump would execute policies that would leave them better off financially.

I actually think that calculation is just wrong cause they dont realize that Trump is going to crash the economy.

between D&W and Spiderman, there will have been at least 15 movies that gross
more than any MCU film.

that’s a two year stretch where MCU is fundamentally just not popular at the movies. that basically has never happen since Avengers (COVID doesn’t count).

Apple, Netflix, etc. just are not operationally designed to ever care about the theatrical model.

No filmmaker should make a deal with them if they want their films to be in theaters. Theatrical releases just aren't aligned with their strategy.

04.08.2025 16:39 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

negative PR to Apple is worth more than whatever millions a proper theatrical release would give it. I actually don't fault them from that perspective.

The problem is that Apple shouldn't be in the fucking movie business for that reason.

"vote blue for me, not for thee"

@booker.senate.gov you're a coward and hypocrite. stand by the voters of the Democratic party and support their candidate because that's (allegedly) what political parties should do even if they dont agree with the entire agenda of their nominee.

like, a lot of issues with movie industry is related to the theatrical model dying/streaming taking over.

But a lot of issues are also just due to social media, YouTube, TikTok, video games, etc. being able to fulfill a need consumers had in a cheaper and more accessible way.

I don't think the stars are the issue tbh. The Hangover and Bridesmaids didn't have any bankable stars and made bank.

I think the problem is that comedy is way more accessible to consumers than ever before. You don't need to watch a movie to see something really funny. It's not a unique draw.

amusingly, I think everyone reaction to his post affirms and disproves it.

I think reading comprehension of things outside the internet/digital world is less valuable than before.

But comprehending the digital world requires a new kind of reading skillset that vast majority of people dont have.

@conorsen.bsky.social can speak for himself but I think his take was not on the idea of reading is not a necessary skillset but that reading comprehension at a elite-level wont be as valuable on its own given how much audio/visual media is rising.

probably the only thing Pakistanis and Indians can agree on still is that the existence of this film is a miracle and it will never happen again.

what's wild about CC phenom is that Sabrina and Paige are also white guards who are/have revolutionized the game but right-wing America thinks only CC is the game-changer cause she may align with their politics more than the other two.

also, CC is still not the best player on her team yet

theatrical model dying has made the movie poster a lost art. It used to be a major piece of marketing used to generate interest because you would go to the theaters and see what was coming next. Artists had to create something that compelling to a passerby.

this has been stated before but Trump 1.0 never had to deal with any legit crisis/challenge that was not created by himself...until COVID. And he handled that so poorly it cost him a winnable election against Joe Biden!

I don't think many people understand just how much worse it is going to get.

if i were a pro-trump financial type i might view the destruction of reliable government data with the kind of anger and apprehension that might lead me to reevaluate my politics, but then if i’m a financial guy throwing my weight behind strongman rule, i’m already too stupid to breathe

it helps that it keeps premium screens for a bit but I feel 300m is a toss-up at best.

But theres zero chance it beats Superman or Jurassic Park which means that 2025 will be the first time since 2011 that no MCU film will be in the Top 5 films of the year (not including 2020 which is always a *)

you’re underestimating that a even a 10% decline of his base from all of this is massive in popularity.

Trump is an unpopular president and losing even a small portion of his base cause of Epstein is enough to keep him unpopular. that matters.

26.07.2025 13:04 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

quite evident that if F4 wasn't coming out, Superman would be a lock for 400m DOM.

23.07.2025 15:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

the best way I described this is that imagine Trump decided to significantly raise taxes for the wealthy across the board. Conservative business folks wouldn't stand by him.

That's what this Epstein saga feels to a lot of people. They expected a payoff and got another coverup. It's a betrayal.

cause its the only issue that can create a genuine civil war within MAGA.

All other issues are still mainly MAGA vs. everyone else. This issue is MAGA vs. MAGA. It completely breaks up the base which has always been Trumps main strength.

I would pin it at 335m-375m right now. Big TBD is how much it drops against F4.

WB wanted 400m+ but I think they'll take 350m given audiences are liking it. A sequel will be bigger.

15.07.2025 16:06 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think people are underestimating how leggy this will be. Even if it just does slightly better than Thor 3 on dailies from now on, it will get to 325m, which seems like a low end.

If it can get close to 55m next weekend, it will land between 350m-375m. Not massive but big enough for a brand.

14.07.2025 20:32 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

2.8x multiplier is basically the goal. I think that would indicate strong enough WOM where the brand has positive momentum moving forward to grow.

all these bad-faith takes on BS somehow live in a world where their twitter isn’t overrun by bots, porn sites, and fringe people on both sides.

what reasonable discussions are people having on twitter these days?

if its just him yes. however, when Fowler, his brother and him are on together, it is actually the best pairing. His brother provides the substance and John provides the "I've literally been in this situation and know the pressure" commentary that does complete the narrative.

also, WAP just came out five years ago and was a bigger song than anything Sabrina or Addison have done.

nothing has changed in the culture. we are living in the same culture we have always lived in. people just have really bad memories.
