The whole idea of how a nuclear war would be fought has shifted Repeatedly. In the cobalt bomb era, the idea was "poison the land and cause as much fall out as possible. We moved on to neutron bombs with NO fall out. Kill the people, capture the cities. Mt. St Helen’s changes a whole lot of things.

If I am remembering correctly, he has said that "it would definitely not be drifting snow and freezing conditions, but there would be something in the zone of effects that are called "nuclear winter."" The strike package would have a lot to do with it. Air, ground or sun-surface detonation.

Nuclear War Survival Skills by Cresson H. Kearny is another good one. There are a ton of other texts, out there, but you have to keep in mind that they are actually educated guesses. Some more educated than others.
