24.07.2025 19:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Okay, I'll set some time for a patch to read / write atom.*prop.* and bond.*prop.* tags in OB and @avogadro.cc. It seems like a good scheme.
I'll comment in your blog so it's clear that we're adopting this.
Something like AM1BCC_charge (or charges?) seems fairly human-readable. (For what it's worth, PubChem uses PUBCHEM_MMFF94_PARTIAL_CHARGES)
Assuming there are some semi-standardized names, it should be easy enough to recognize these.
Are there other kinds of atom / bond property lists people should look out for?
atom.iprop, bond.dprop, etc.?
For example, some quantum programs calculate a floating-point bond order which is useful in some ML models
Just to make sure I understand:
atom.dprop.AM1BCC_charge
atom.dprop => a list of atomic properties in double format
Then you're proposing X_charge as an indication of atomic partial charges of type X?
I'd love to read/write charges in SD files in Open Babel and @avogadro.cc
I'm actually checking what Claude and ChatGPT give back for my p-chem class this fall.
Like I want to find examples which are clearly hilariously bad for chem majors.
I heard them described as "that guy at the bar who's super confident after a beer - because he read this thing on the Internet"

22.07.2025 15:34 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0To be clear, I doubt it will change anytime soon.
There's $$ for large centers, $$ for established researchers, the usual early-career 3-5 year awards
But for "I have this cool idea," there's very little. (Scialog from @rescorp.org is one good example.)
Years ago, just after getting tenure, I was invited to a workshop with folks from the Obama Office of Science & Tech Policy
I argued that I'd like to see more short-term "seed" funding options, esp. for early and mid-career faculty.
There's little $$ available for this

And don't forget - if scientists and engineers can continue to develop more efficient materials (e.g., perovskites, tandem, etc.) it will only get better.
Is that finally closed? It's been open through last weekend when I ran through. Glad if they're finally starting the remediation.

Yes. He was one of the initial developers. We all got fed up with Ghemical and I wrote up a design spec for what became Avogadro.
IIRC Donald wrote a bunch of the code architecture and rendering code.

Frustrations with Ghemical directly led to the initial work on Avogadro. (And I think Donald Curtis worked with you at Iowa)

I'd suggest using other tire stores anyway. I had good luck with NTB on Penn, but there are plenty of other places with good tires in stock.
